In a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Sagisag Kultura (Cultural Icons) Exhibit was formally launched at the Executive Building lobby of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) last May 14.

National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), in partnership with the said university opened the display of cultural icons for public viewing. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was headed by the university president-Dr. Milabel Enriquez-Ho, Dr. Mario I. Miclat, head of the NCCA’s National Committee on Language and Translation and Dean of the University of the Philippines’ Asian Center, Dr. Virgilio S. Almario, National Artist for Literature and City Councilor Rodolfo R. Lim.

The exhibit was first launched in Zamboanga City and in Mindanao, as initiated by the OIC Vice President for Research, Extension and Development and former Office of Culture and the Arts Director-Dr. Roberto B. Torres. The displays feature the different icons related to our culture and history bearing national character and regional relevance.

In a short program preceding the opening of the exhibit, Dr. Ho warmly received the guests in her welcome address. “We bring joy to Western Mindanao State University with the partnership we have with the National Commission on Culture and the Arts,” Dr. Ho exclaimed. She further mentioned that the university needs support to rehabilitate its renowned Social Hall because it is an icon and witness of culture and heritage in this part of the country. She also expressed her willingness of WMSU to be a partner with NCCA in various projects in relevance with culture and the arts.

In behalf of the City Mayor Celso L. Lobregat, Councilor Lim also welcomed the visitors and wished them well as they stay here in the city. The project is part of the Filipino Cultural Education Program of the NCCA, in which over 8000 cultural symbols from all over the Philippines were considered and sorted.

He went on, “The national icon project shall therefore serve as a resource material for textbook writers as guide in curricular development and as an aid to school lessons in any level and any subject. In short, the registry aims to widen our awareness about ourselves as a nation so that we may take pride in being a part of our glorious cultural achievement...” The awareness he said shall kindle a more intense love of country.

Also with Dr. Miclat were the NCCA coordinators: Dr. Roberto Añonuevo (Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino), Genevieve Asenjo (De La Salle University of Manila), Dr. Severino Capitan (UP Los Baño)s, Dr. Imelda de Castro (University of Sto.
