DENR-IX observes 2013 National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week

A fitting program attended by DENR-IX employees marked the early opening of this year’s NDPR Week Celebration with the theme “Building an Inclusive and Non-Handicapping Environment for Persons with Disability”.

Atty. Celso D. Manuales, Pagadian City Prosecution Office Head- Department of Justice  (DOJ) was the guest speaker  during the program held  on July 15, 2013 at the Office of the Regional Executive Director  (ORED) in Pagadian City. Atty. Manuales explained the salient provisions of Republic Act (RA) No. 9442, an Act amending RA No. 7277, otherwise known as the “Magna Carta for Disabled Persons & for other purposes” including laws enacted by Local Legislators  of Pagadian City. He cited the penal provisions of the Act and enumerated other privileges wherein   Persons with Disability (PWD) shall be entitled: (a) At least twenty percent (20%) discount from all establishments relative to the utilization of all services in hotels and similar lodging establishments; restaurants and recreation centers for the exclusive use or enjoyment of persons with disability; (b) A minimum of twenty percent (20%) discount on admission fees charged by the theaters, cinema houses, concert halls, circuses, carnivals and other similar places of culture, leisure and amusement for the exclusive use or enjoyment of persons with disability; (c) At least twenty percent (20%) discount for the purchase of medicines in all drugstores for the exclusive use or enjoyment of persons with disability; among others.

Mr. Bong Solivio, President, Pagadian City Federation of PWD was also present  to grace the occasion. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to God for using DENR as an instrument to promote and conduct relevant activities in the annual celebration of NDPR Week which is observed every July 17-23.

Focusing on the above theme, RED Adorable said the DENR has lined-up various activities  related to the Department’s mandate:  July 14-Hanging of Streamers, July 15-fitting program; July 17- Radio (DXKP) and TV program (RPN9-Pagadian City) with City Prosecutor Manuales and Bong Solivio as guests; and  July 18- press release- all  for public awareness and action;  July 22- Greening activity at the Pagadian City Rotunda to be participated in by Special Education (SPED) students headed by Ms. Leila Abayon-Principal, Hangop Kabataan Foundation, Incorporated students and the group of Mr. Bong Solivio. The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) will provide 25 plantable mahogany seedlings and laborers to facilitated the above activity; and July 23-   Information Awareness Campaign  on Climate Change: Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies and other DENR priority programs and projects, etc.

“We also participated in the NDPR Week Celebration kick-off motorcade and program hosted by the Office of City Social Welfare and Development headed by Chief, Abdulgani Pagayao, Philippine Information Agency and other private media outfits, and the Office of the Pagadian City Prosecution Office, DOJ- the lead agency for this year’s celebration, director Adorable said.

The NDPR week celebration which involved the government and private sectors, the civil society organizations and the sector of persons with disability is being commemorated annually every July 17-23. It aims primarily to stimulate public awareness on the issues and problems of disability, thereby encouraging every citizen of the country to take active responsibility in the upliftment of the economic and social conditions of PWD of our society.  The celebration culminates on the birthdate of Apolinario Mabini, the Sublime Paralytic whose bravery and heroic acts during the Philippine Revolution of 1896 has greatly influenced his compatriots in fighting against the Spanish colonization.  (H. Beng distributes relief goods to Triplet fire victims

Mayor Beng Climaco on Wednesday afternoon spearheaded the distribution of relief goods to families displaced by the early dawn fire in Lemon Drive, Triplet, Barangay Canelar. Mayor Climaco, assisted by personnel from the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) personally handed over the relief goods to the 18 families whose houses were totally damaged by the conflagration. The distribution was held at the Canelar covered court. The relief goods included kitchen utensils, mats, canvas as well as rice, noodles and canned goods and other goods. Cash assistance will also be given to the displaced families as soon as assessment and validation by the CSWDO is done.
