Sports Dec. 1, 2013 Southern Bullpups in smashing title retention debut

The Southern City Colleges High School basketball squad, served notice it was not about to relinquish its crown this year, shot down Western Mindanao State University junior Crimsons in a 96-34 rout to formally usher in the 5th staging of the 2013  SeaOil NBTC Basketball league last Sunday morning  ( Dec. 1, 2013) at the Mayor Agan Memorial Coliseum ( Zamboanga City Coliseum) in Tetuan.

Bannered by the all around play of its heady skipper center-forward Reymund Andico, the bullpups look to top anew this year’s 12 team field and book a seat to the NBTC regional finals and a chance to see action anew in the National finals early next year.

The League opened to a simple inaugural rites with the traditional parade of teams and a short program headlined by Councilor Roehl Natividad, committee chair on sports and one time top cager who plied his talents as a blue eagle here at the Ateneo and the Southwestern University in Cebu during his playing days.

He extolled the youth to work hard in sports and excel in whatever discipline they decide to and be the pride of a city that is seeking to rise from the ashes of a crippling 3 week siege.

Natividad paid tribute to organizers headed by SBP Area head and Trustee and NBTC franchise holder Pedro Alfaro Jr. for keeping the league going and giving an avenue for aspiring local cagers to shine and become good ball players.

He represented Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar in the opening rites in his capacity as sport czar in the city council.

Meantime, Commissioner Pete Alfaro called on the players to do their best and get a chance to play in the forthcoming SeaOil NBTC all star game.

Here is the chance for younger players in the high schools here to show case their talents in the national finals if they qualify for the all stars.

Alfaro took time to thank her honor the mayor through Councilor Natividad for her support as well as to NBTC National Coordinator and coach Eric Altamirano for the trust and confidence he has shown for the games to be brought donw south here in Zamboanga City.

Also last Sunday, Ferndale International School edged out a hardfighting Zamboanga City High School Main 86-77 in game two, Claret School of Zamboanga bamboozled Zamboanga Chong Hua School  111-43 with Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial High School making short work of Pilar College in the last game 70-43.

Other schools participating include Zion Evangelical School, Saint Joseph School, and Bethany Child Development Center with organizers awaiting word on the participation of Avalokitesvara School.

Tournament Director Joel Quintanes formally introduced the participants to the crowd assisted by Touney manager Ferdie Bernabe.
