(BY: REV. BERLIE G. YAP) There how many locals waited this back since the siege last year, because October ain’t just an ordinary month for a regular Zamboangueño—it is a joy and festivities. The City was deprived of it last year because of the unexpected local war of our government troops against the MNLF Misuari faction. The conflict claimed hundreds of lives and stole a lot Zamboanga City. We’d such a loss in terms of revenue, opportunities and pride which by God’s grace we are gradually regaining today. This statement is an obvious fact if you know what good things are now happening around.
A new Queen was crowned yesterday (Friday) before 1 o’clock dawn, the 2014 Miss Zamboanga Ma. Purita Arquiza. She is only 18 years old, from the Ateneo de Zamboanga University and lives in Baranggay Tetuan. She is fondly known by everyone as “Fritz”. In the pageant she wore the number 11 sash.
eMedia reporter Serlinn Mae Amparo remarked in her impression, as she covered the event, that the young lady stood-out as a natural girl beauty which an average citizen can be unsuspecting of her potentials that indeed were unleashed in the Miss Zamboanga pageantry.
Miss Arquiza’s picked her Q & A, in it a question was scribbled if who did she think is the sexiest man alive today and her reply without hesitations— “the Atty. Alfredo Jimenez!” The surprised crowd responded with cheers.
1st Runner up is candidate no. 9 Miss Cess Diane Daung from the Ateneo de Zamboanga University, 2nd runner up candidate no. 12 Miss Bellatrix Tan also from Ateneo de Zamboanga University, 3rd runner up candidate no. 9 Miss Karen Andalar and the 4th runner up candidate no. 2 Miss Elaine Santos. Another candidate was a popular bet of the crowd and garnered numerous awards. She was candidate no. 4 Miss Crystelle Bulalacao. But unfortunately the taste of judges was different than the crowd’s hence she wasn’t included in the magic five. Her fanatic supporters were disgusted however as in every competition a loss is not a defeat.
What Zamboangueños are to watch for more? On Monday, October 6, another pageant will happen but this time done by nurses in the prestigious Ciudad Medical Hospital. Both 2014 Miss Zamboanga and 2014 Miss Ciudad Medical are covered by eMedia as the events official FM Radio and TV Station.
Let’s talk a little serious, this about our neighbour Isabela City, Basilan. The City Council of Isabela invited last Thursday, October 2, 2014, in their regular session the officers of the AFP 104th Brigade and the local PNP to conduct investigation regarding the two MK2 fragmentation grenades that were abandoned and recovered in a restaurant last September 9 but did not reflect in the PNP blotter.
The investigation revealed that the serial number of the grenades were traced and registered to an enlisted AFP personnel and PNP officer.
The council asked if the AFP officer as to why his people are carrying with them their service grenades in the City proper. The AFP officer informed the council that his personnel are not authorized to carry such when not in uniform and when not in official mission.
The subject personnel admitted that the grenades are owned by them but said grenades only just inadvertently fell from their bags with no malice involved. Please recall that the recent explosion in ASL Gasoline station owned by Vice-Mayor Abdulbaki Ajibon, the investigation revealed, was fragmentation grenade.
“And provide for those who grieve…to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.” Isa. 61:3
