On Wednesday at exactly 12 midnight, according to the accounts of the victims, a whirlwind (or twister) lambasted Sitio Mulu-Muluan, Mercedes. Two houses were affected—one was totally destroyed while the other was only partly destroyed just affecting its roof and stairway.
The destroyed house is owned by a certain Gilbert Damgo. In an eMedia interview by partner GIL Climaco, Damgo relayed the scenario that while they were fast asleep, they heard a whooping sound and suddenly, a very strong wind blew their house, destroyed it and splintered everything to as far as some 50 meters away. Only their bed was left while all were destroyed and blown away.
Fortunately, there was no casualty. In the vicinity were fallen trees littered everywhere. Immediately, Baranggay eMedia, led by no less than the station’s president Rey Bayona Bayoging, responded to the place to bring relief goods to the victims.
To happen coincidentally during the City’s Fiesta Hermosa, a super typhoon is threatening the country. Ompong (international name Vong fong) is named as a super typhoon and the strongest this year to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) according to PAGASA. Its strength did not spare Zamboanga City as heavy rains and particularly strong winds falling countless of trees in some places and causing power interruptions in notable areas including eMedia station early Thursday morning yesterday.
Reporter Ely Dumaboc with his cameraman Bryan Abuy were immediately dispatched as a concerned caller informed eMedia about a huge tree that fell along a road in Baranggay Tumaga, specifically at the front of Bacolod Lodge at least 7:30 in the morning which is the timely usual span where the same stretch of road jams, every day, with motorists heading to Ateneo de Zamboanga High School department in Tumaga-Luzuran Road.
The said fallen tree caused traffic congestions but after 20 minutes the road was cleared back again. 10 bolos, emphatically reported by partner Ely, sped-up the clearing process. Responding neighbors, baranggay tanods and some policemen helped the chopping work to the tree’s big branches which blocked the road. A house was affected and partly destroyed but during the incident nobody was inside.
Baranggay Tumaga Captain Miss Jacky Lim did also rush to the place and actually manned the clearing work. In an interview she sighed, “At least no human life was hurt or a vehicle destroyed.” She added that they would totally cut the tree as it may endanger worse in the future.
In no time, a second concerned citizen also texted eMedia about another falling tree, along Sitio Talungon, Baranggay San Roque, partly hanging to the cable wires of ZAMCELCO and lying occupying half of the road, hence disturbing passing motorists heading to nearby schools like the Regional Science High School and San Roque Elementary School.
2 more trees fell in Lunzuran and in Armor Village, San Roque while a house was lambasted and destroyed by strong winds in Sinunuc.
Meanwhile, an outlet of Mang Tinapay was held-up at around 5 o’clock in the morning yesterday. Bad elements took advantage of the bad weather to rob the said bakery.
A dead body was also found on Wednesday afternoon floating along the shore of RT Lim Boulevard. The said body is believed to be of the engineering student missing since last Monday.
Because of the super typhoon, eMedia again went on a special coverage programming and suspending its regular schedule to report to the public the freshest and hottest news happening in the city.
At 8 AM, the recently crowned 2014 Miss Zamboanga, Pritz Arquiza joined partners GIL Climaco and Liza Jocson to anchor the said special coverage program. Miss Arquiza shared that her win in the prestigious pageantry is still gradually sinking-in to her realization. Well, that is normal to an 18-year old young lady.
