Management educators in R-IX attend MAP-AIM workshop

PDFPrintE-mail

The Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) and the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) partnered with the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) through the Center for Continuing Education (CCE) and the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) in conducting the MAP-AIM Management Educators’ Workshop (MEW) from November 6 to 7 at the Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City.

About 50 management educators from different universities and colleges in the region were participants to the workshop which covered essential areas and innovative techniques in teaching management.

Participants of the training hailed from the following academic institutions in the region: WMSU, ZSCMST, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Basilan State College, Medina College, Claret College of Isabela, Universidad de Zamboanga, Jose H. Cerilles State College, ICAS, St. Columban College, and Regional Technology College of Tawi-Tawi.

These educators and guests were welcomed by presidents of the partner institutions who actively pushed for the conduct of the workshop—Dr. Milabel Enriquez-Ho (WMSU) and Dr. Milavel D. Nazario (ZSCMST).

Dr. Juanito R. Demetrio, Director of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Region IX, was the keynote speaker during the opening program. He stressed how grateful the region is for being the recipient of MAP and AIM’s advocacy. CHED is in the middle of educational reforms encompassing accreditations and outcomes-based education and catching up with the government age where everything is outcomes-based and therefore, the workshop on management is, according to Dr. Demetrio, timely.

Prof. Mario Antonio G. Lopez, a professor from AIM who once graced WMSU as the guest speaker of the university’s 2013 commencement exercises, was among the representatives from MAP and AIM. As project manager, overall facilitator of the workshop and member of the MAP Management Development Committee, Prof. Lopez provided the objectives and expected outputs of the workshop.

He mentioned how the knowledge of management can help improve the academe’s curricula especially in the fast-changing demand of customers, clients, citizens and stakeholders.

These are the following subjects covered in the two-day seminar by notable speakers who are experts in management: Human Resource Requirements for AgriBusiness by Dr. Jose Rene C. Gayo (Member and Project Manager for Farm Business School, MAP AgriBusiness and Countryside Development Committee / Trustee, VP and Group Head, Farm Business Institute, MFI Foundation, Inc.); Human Resource Requirements for Accountancy and Auditing by Mr. Jessie C. Carpio (Chair, MAP Management Development Committee / President, P&A Grant Thornton Outsourcing, Inc.); Human Resource Requirements for Environmental Management by Dr. Corazon PB. Claudio (Chair, MAP Climate Change and Sustainable Development Committee / President, EARTH Institute Asia, Inc.); Human Resources Requirements for ICT by Ms. Helen P. Macasaet (Chair, MAP ICT Committee / President and CEO, Pentathlon Systems Resources, Inc.); Human Resources Requirements for Eco-Tourism by Ms. Alma Rita R. Jimenez (Chair, MAP ASEAN Integration Committee and MAP CEO Conference Committee / President and CEO, Health Solutions Corporation); Human Resources Requirements for Internet Marketing by Dr. Donald Patrick Lim (Treasurer, MAP / Chief Digital Officer, ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation); A Briefing on AEC 2015 by Mr. Greg Navarro (President, MAP / Managing Partner and CEO, Navarro Amper & Co. / Deloitte Philippines); and Prof. Mario Antonio G. Lopez’ talks on Addressing the Competency Requirements of Various Industries/Businesses, Preparing Students to become Effective Managers and Entrepreneurs, and Alternative Pedagogies/Delivery Modes.

At the end of the training, the participants were tasked to come up with a list of some of the characteristics of an effective manager. They were also made to provide a framework for a productive approach towards teaching students to become effective managers. (AJ Dalugdug – Public Affairs Office, WMSU)
