Govt troops find P52M cash, P23M checks in Maute house

PDFPrintE-mail

Troops fighting to retake the city of Marawi have recovered P52 million  and P23 million worth of checks in a house used by Daesh-linked Maute terrorists, the military said.

Lt. Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr., chief of Western Mindanao Command, said soldiers of 37th Marine Company, Marine Battalion Landing Team-7 was conducting clearing operations when they found the voluminous cash and checks.

Galvez said the money and checks were found at a residence in Barangay Saduc Proper, Marawi City at about 11: 30 a.m. of June. An M16 Armalite was also recovered in the house after troops neutralized a sniper.

"Marine forces doing house to house clearing against the terrorists recovered the amount and under constant fire, a team extricated the area to surrender the millions to the Headquarters of Task Force Marawi," he added.

"The recovered money will be for safekeeping of proper authorities until appropriate investigation is conducted and proper identification of owner is established."

According to Galvez, this act is a manifestation for keeping the highest standard of discipline, valor and commitment in safeguarding Marawi and defending the community from terror elements.

Brig. Gen. Joselito Rolando Bautista, commander of Task Force Marawi commended troops for their act of honesty as he pointed the destruction done by terrorists.

"We are proud of our soldiers in the field. Their commendable actions in caring for our people bespeak of the best practices in the AFP," Bautista said.

The military officials condemned the propaganda of Maute and Abu Sayyaf and their sympathizers in peddling twisted data and disinformation to advocate violence and evil acts.

"We also condemn the Maute/ASG and their sympathizers for looting houses, burning school buildings and houses and destroyed many properties in Marawi particularly desecrating house of worships such as mosques and church," Galvez said.

Meanwhile, Marawi City’s Bishop Edwin de la Pena condemned the destruction of St. Mary’s Cathedral as “demonic”.

“We are angered by what happened,” he told CBCP News. “Our faith has really been trampled on.”

A video released by an agency linked to Daesh at the weekend showed militants smashing Roman Catholic icons and burning down the church.

“That is blasphemy. It’s unacceptable,” De la Pena said. “It’s obvious that their actions are really out of this world. It’s demonic.”

Governor Mujiv Hataman of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) also condemned the local terror groups' desecration of St. Mary's Cathedral in Marawi City.

In a statement, Hataman said: "This is inhumane and unacceptable -- their acts mirror that of the Khawarij and their belief betrays those of our faith. These terrorists are nothing but hypocrites who undermine the true essence of Islam."

He tagged the terrorists as the "the worst of the creation".

"It is our responsibility as Muslims to denounce the actions of the members of the Maute Group and Abu Sayyaf, and all other local groups whose actions are a disservice to Islam -- a faith that promotes compassion, kindness and peace."

The ARMM governor called on the people to not allow the terrorists to hijack and destroy Islam. "We cannot and must not tolerate them, and we must make sure that they are brought to justice."

Since militants attacked the city, around 30 civilians, 40 soldiers and more than 100 militants have been killed. Hader Glang
