DIPOLOG CITY - Philippine National Police (PNP), in coordination with Philippine Drugs Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Zamboanga del Norte has scored anew in its campaign against the proliferation of illegal drugs in Dipolog City as the elements of Dipolog City Police Office (DCPO), together with other law enforcement agencies has apprehended the former Councilor of Dipolog City in a buy-bust operation.
Aside from the members of Dipolog City PNP, other members of the raiding team include the representative of the Philippine Drugs Enforcement Agency led by Police Inspector Mendel Sales-Casao; 9th Regional Public Safety Battalion led Police Inspector Edison Francisco Alviar and Team David led Engr. Silvestre Sabando which is under the direct supervision of Supt. Maclang.
Dipolog City PNP Chief of Police, Supt. Reynaldo M. Maclang identified the suspect as Joseph Herrera, 55 years old, former City Councilor of Dipolog City, now employed at the Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Assessor’s Office, as Local Assessment Officer IV.
Herrera and his live-in partner, Mary Jane Gomez Y Lopez, 23 year-old resident of Fatima, Liloy Zamboanga del Norte were apprehended around 11:30 in the evening at his residence along Herrera St. corner Andres Bonifacio St., this city
The suspects were arrested in a buy-bust operation and by virtue of the search warrant issued by Dipolog City Regional Trial Court Branch 10 Judge Chandler O. Ruiz.
Maclang said the drug buy bust operation was done after a whistle-blower, a certain Rico, informed the Dipolog City Police Office of the illegal activities of Herrera. This was followed by a series of test buy conducted against the suspect last April 28 and 29.
Confiscated from Herrera are his brown wallet, with two pieces P500.00 bills used as marked money with serial numbers QC738299 and KU411044, and another set of cash amounting to P530.00; fourteen (14) pieces of transparent plastic sachets allegedly containing crystalline granules believed to be shabu; 38 caliber pistol with 4 live ammunitions; 9 x-rated films and other shabu paraphernalia.
The operation was witnessed by the members of the local media led by Sorayda Eva Mostaril, and Mar Ayuban of local radio station DXAA and representative of ABS-CBN.
However, Herrera denied ownership of the cal. 38 pistol as he failed to present pertinent papers for his possession of the said gun.
After his arrest, Herrera, together with Gomez were brought to Zamboanga del Norte Medical Center for appropriate medical check-up.
Maclang said, Herrera and Gomez will be brought today to the PNP-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group for drug testing.
The two are presently detained at the Dipolog City PNP Reformatory Cell while police authorities are preparing to file appropriate charges against them for violating Republic Act no.9165, popularly known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Law. (Alfonso T. Ruda-PIA9-Zambo Norte)
