ZamboSur officials urge public to take care of the environment

PDFPrintE-mail

Pagadian City – “Progress and development could not be achieved without taking care of the environment”.

Thus, declared governor Antonio H. Cerilles in his message delivered by provincial administrator Frederick Anthony Padayhag on Saturday during the Arbor Day celebration and provincial launching of the National Greening Program (NGP) at the provincial government complex center, Dao here.

Cerilles, the ceremony’s keynote speaker said “we seek economic development and progress but all these could not be attained without us taking care of our environment. Even how good our roads and beautiful our buildings are, but if we will extremely exploit and abuse our environment, development and progress is meaningless,” Cerilles said.

“The NGP provincial launching goes hand in hand with the thrust of the provincial government on environmental preservation, protection and conservation,” Cerilles said.

Cerilles, a former DENR Secretary, said he was very happy that the provincial government center was chosen as planting site of the initial 200 high-quality seedlings saying that the provincial government has considered and planned that the site will soon be transformed into a "Green City."

2nd district representative Aurora E. Cerilles, who was ably represented by provincial agriculturist Marilyn Bersales in her message said the provincial launching of NGP is a government priority program toward consolidating and harmonizing all greening efforts that would bring about beneficial outcomes in poverty reduction, forest conservation and protection, productivity enhancement, climate change mitigation, and adaptation.

The legislator was pleased to witness the massive support of the different sectors who manifested their commitment in the collective movement for a green and safe environment.

She encouraged constituents in the province to plant trees in the surrounding areas or in the farm adding that it would address and set off mitigation and adaptation measures of our climate.

Mayor Samuel S. Co who was also represented by City Councilor Alexander Co shared with the lady legislator’s observation of the activity saying that the NGP of President Benigno S. Aquino is a national concern.

Co said our degraded forest lands and watershed areas are being caused by industrialization, urbanization, deforestation and mining, and its damage causes by climate change.

“With this problem, I therefore extol our people, not only from the national line agencies of the government,non-government organizations, the private sector and the community to plant and nurture trees to enrich our environment,” Co urged the public.

Co also said while Pagadian was adjudged consistently as the cleanest and greenest city for region IX from 1998 to 2004 and one of the national finalists for the Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran, “we did not stop our tree planting activities.” “In fact, we are having a tree planting activity twice a year, during the Pasalamat festival and the Araw ng Pagadian, involving barangays, schools, city government employees and national government agencies,” Co explained.

Among those who joined the activity were forest management services regional technical director Ali M. Barri, National Commission on Indigenous Peoples regional director Abdul Puengan, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Dr. Adelaida Borja, Department of the Interior and Local Government provincial director Hadji Abcede H. Asjali, and employees of national line agencies, non-governmental and civic organizations. (Gideon C. Corgue - ALT/GCC/PIA9/Pagadian City)
