The Department of Education (DepEd), Schools Division of Zamboanga City actively took its role in propagating peace within the institution and partner schools through convening local school peace coordinators, guidance counselors, Supreme Student Government Advisers and Faculty Club President in a one day Teachers Peace Education Orientation last July 14, 2011 at Marcian Business Hotel, Zamboanga City.
DepEd’s Schools Division of Zamboanga City is one of the peace partners of Peace Advocates Zamboanga (PAZ), recognized by the Interreligious Solidarity Movement for Peace (IRSMP) as an institution very supportive to the various advocacies on peace and development in the city.
IRSMP and PAZ spearhead the conduct of the said peace education orientation as the third orientation especially emphasizing one’s role in the integration of peace education in the basic education and teacher education.
Fr. Angel C. Calvo. CMF, Lead Convenor of IRSMP expressed an affirmation on the great role that the DepEd as an institution portray its roles in inspiring the secondary schools to be very active in the implementation of the peace education. The said orientation is an offshoot of the previously held peace education orientation for secondary Schools Administrators and Elementary Supervisors, School Heads and Alternative Learning System Coordinators.
Meanwhile, Atty. Al Rahimin Teo Kenoh, Administrative Officer V of the division, OIC- Office of the Superintendent disclosed strong support to the advocacy of PAZ and IRSMP. He even challenged the teachers to respond to the emerging call of integration of the peace education and to live as peace advocates and role models of peace.
“It is our (DepEd) role in spearheading the conduct of the peace education as mandated through the Executive Order 570” added Atty. Kenoh during the Opening Ceremony of the said orientation. Moreover, he gratefully extended sincere gratitude to IRSMP and PAZ for providing the teachers an avenue to re-learn the said processes of the Culture of Peace.
On the other point, Dr. Mayceebelle Tee, Division Supervisor- Araling Panlipunan and Peace Education Coordinator emphasized the role of the teachers in educating peace. She mentioned the need to be real models of peace and commit for the said integration and finding many ways to initiate programs for peace.
Since the start of the peace education journey, IRSMP emphasized the rocky roads that let everyone realized the importance o instilling in the minds and hearts of the students, teachers and administrators the culture of peace as against the culture of violence.
Dr. Grace Rebollos, Western Mindanao State University President presented an Integral Understanding of the Culture of Peace and Hji. Abdu Rahim Kenoh, retired Schools Division Superintendent supplemented pertinent information of Peace Education and Specifics of the said executive order.
The culture of peace gives rise and emanates from personal to social transformation, greater analysis on the current peace situations with a greater capability for skills on conflict transformation. Concrete plans were shared by IRSMP to teacher’s especially practical things on peace that as an educator can do within the school and community.
In the plenary discussion, teachers from various schools shared personal and institutional plan in doing practical things to include the establishment of peace walls and parks, capability-building through In-service Training and Brigada Eskwela for teachers and administrators and students through the Culture of peace and Peace Camps. Also, the group emphasized the creation of peace and dialogue clubs such as Zamboanga Youth for peace Organization (ZYPO) which had been functional for the past ten years.
The teachers push forward for the significant support from the division level especially the procurement of exemplars, lesson plans and peace education modules, books and other references so as to better integrate the said peace education. A Total School Approach for Peace Education was shared by Ms. Emma I. Delgado, PAZ Executive Secretary during the afternoon’s session. She mentioned various successful and best practices from various schools in Mindanao with a greater emphasis on the thresholds of peace and governance project. Aldrin B. Abdurahim, IRSMP Executive Coordinator emphasized the journey that was for the past four years and ways to move forward through the Six Paths to peace.
Within Mindanao, our division had a higher peak and greater wavelength as to the success of the peace education. Being the first to conduct massive peace education orientation, other division looks forward to hear successful stories and gains in our own travel and journey for peace.
The collaboration of the peace education orientation from DepEd, IRSMP and PAZ is another interesting journey as the movement geared in flourishing 2011 and moving its peace frontiers. Through these engagements, the institutions are now ready to maximize its resources and efforts in honoring the gifts of time, talents in providing a sustained network of schools as zones of peace.
Through the spirit of peace and solidarity, our quest for peace will eventually be a reality. Peace is all about people-bringing people together and collectively move ways o make it as part of our way of life.
