Admin lawmakers file resolution supporting PNoy

PDFPrintE-mail

Administration lawmakers filed a resolution at the House of Representatives supporting President Benigno S. Aquino III in upholding the tenets of good governance and public accountability.

Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr., one of the authors of House Resolution 1918, on Tuesday said they are confident to get at least 200 congressmen who will sign in support of the resolution by the end of the week.

At present, he said more than 120 lawmakers have already signed the resolution supporting the "extraordinary" political will of President Aquino "to weed out corruption, inefficiency, and abuse of power" in government.

House Majority Leader and Mandaluyong City Rep. Neptali Gonzales II said that aside from lawmakers belonging to the ruling Liberal Party (LP), congressmen belonging to other political parties such as the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC) and the Nacionalista Party (NP) have expressed support to the resolution.

Around 35 to 45 out of the total 56 party-list representatives have also promised to sign HR 1918.

Meanwhile, both House leaders urged their colleagues to just leave all discussions regarding the cases filed against former president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to the courts.

Belmonte said the Lower Chamber should prioritize the passage of economic bills, noting that there are only three weeks left before Congress suspends sessions for the Christmas break.

"We do realize that we have to keep the pressure on the economic bills. Hindi naman puwedeng itong issue lang na ito ang aming (tatalakayin). We have to get on to other things on the agenda," he said.

For his part, Gonzales said lawmakers’ views on the former president's case will be "immaterial" since the case will be decided based on evidence to be presented in court.

"Ang appeal din naman namin, now that the issue is already in the courts, siguro hayaan na natin ang korte doon so that each and every institution can go back to their work," he said.

Gonzales echoed the appeal made by the Speaker to his colleagues to focus on legislative work instead of bringing debates on Mrs. Arroyo’s case to the plenary.

"The more that we are involved in this issue, these are times taken away from the bills we have to work on. Kung magpatuloy ‘yan, dalawa o tatlong oras, iyan ang pag-uusapan namin, don’t expect na may mapag-uusapan na iba," he said.

Gonzales made the statement a day after House Minority Leader and Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman delivered a privilege speech assailing the Aquino government for blocking the former president's travel and allegedly railroading the filing of the case against her.

Mrs. Arroyo is currently in temporary hospital arrest at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City due to her bone mineral disorder and hypoparathyroidism.
