Police crime syndicates & meat smuggling

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus…” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, the Holy Bible).

TULFO MERELY DOING HIS JOB: Now that two ground personnel of Cebu Pacific Air have come out in the open to say that columnist Ramon Tulfo merely tried to record through his cellphone camera the verbal abuse that actress Claudine Barreto was heaping upon them on account of a misplaced baggage, what can Barreto and husband-actor Raymart Santiago say in return?

IT IS MEAT SMUGGLING TO THE TUNE OF 100 M KILOS THAT IS THE ISSUE: The more important issue that meat importers and processors from the Philippine Association of Meat Processors, Inc., Meat Importers and Traders Association, Inc., and Cold Chain Association of the Philippines should address is the claim of hog and fowl raisers that some 100 million of kilos of meat is being smuggled into the country yearly.

Assuming that local pig and chicken producers have products that do not meet the requirements of meat importers and processors, the real problem here is meat smuggling which, according to AGAP Party List Rep. Nicanor Briones, reaches to about 100 million kilos annually, and which deprives the government of taxes amounting to P60 billion every year.

Indeed, defective local hog and fowl products can never be a justification for meat smuggling which, because of its sheer quantity and the amount of taxes that are not paid, could be considered economic sabotage that merits the maximum penalty of life imprisonment. I guess there should be a law considering meat smuggling as a heinous crime.

POLICE AND CRIME SYNDICATES: So what else is new with the news that a police general could be behind the killing of Alfred Mendiola, evidently to prevent him from testifying in the 2011 killing of car dealer Venson Evangelista?
No matter how the Philippine National Police (PNP) may try to downplay the involvement of its officers and men in big crime syndicates, there is always the suspicion in people’s minds that many of them continue to either provide protection to the syndicates, or are themselves the syndicates.
One needs only to look at the lifestyles of many PNP officers and men---with posh houses and flashy cars, and foreign education for their children, as well as glittering jewelries and mistresses that are often beyond their ordinary salaries. Where are they getting the money for these if not from their criminal activities?

BARANGAY POLLS’ POSTPONEMENT: Postponing the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections to some other dates is good, if the incumbents are conscientious, diligent and efficient. But supposing they are corrupt, inefficient and are not capable of serving the public? There are pros and cons to the postponement which many lawmakers are now seeking, but the bottom line should be what is good for the barangay constituents.

THREATENED BROADCASTER SHOULD INVOKE GOD’S PROTECTION: Cagayan De Oro City radio commentator James Michael Licuanan, popularly known as “Bombo James Dacuycoy”, reported there is a new threat in his life. What must he do now? Stop his radio program? I guess that he should go on with his media work, no matter the death threat, but he should place himself under the protection of God, from now on. How to do this? Read and live the Bible daily, James.
