VP Binay: Police should be held accountable for 'humiliating' former Senate Pres. Salonga

PDFPrintE-mail

The police should be made accountable for the “humiliation” that former Senate President Jovito Salonga suffered Monday, according to Vice President Jejomar Binay.

Binay, in a statement, added that he was “deeply bothered” by the attempt to serve the warrant of arrest against the former senate president.
“I am saddened by the issuance of the warrant of arrest on former Senator Jovito Salonga and deeply bothered by the attempt of the police to serve the warrant,” the Vice President said.

Binay said Salonga’s stature as an elder statesman and a champion of human rights and good government should have been considered by the police authorities before making the move that “needlessly humiliated” him.

"What was the motive of the police for taking such a move when Senator Salonga could have been notified through his lawyers and bail could have been posted?" Binay said.

“There should have been consideration given by the police not only to his advanced age and frail condition, but to his stature as one of the leading lights of the struggle for democracy and a pillar of governance,” he said.

Salonga’s son, Steve, earlier said his father suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and senile dementia, which was aggravated by the death of Salonga’s wife in 2010.

Binay expressed his full support for Salonga and said his office would “extend all legal assistance that may be needed” by Salonga.
He also said that he would spearhead in the effort to raise the amount of bail for “the grand old man.”

Mr. Binay, you should Better as vice president of the philippines and as a lawyer that no one is above the law and the law is equal to everyone regardless you are the president of the republic or a low life. By saying that the police should be held accountable for " humiliation " because of the arrest of mr. Salonga, is irresponsible. Does it mean, that if the vice president of the philipines will commit a crime the police authorities should treat you him defferently with leniency. Obviously not. There is nothing in the constitution and there is no law that say, if you are high ranking government official you will be treated nicely when you commit a crime. And besides, the police are doing there job. They should be commended not condemned. Because, they show no favoritism in the enforcement and implementation of the law. Good luck.
