'Fear and love of God’: next CJ’s traits

PDFPrintE-mail

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…So Pharaoh asked them, `Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the Spirit of God?’…” (Genesis 41:38, the Holy Bible).

“FEAR AND LOVE OF GOD”, NEXT CJ’S TRAITS: With due respect, many officials, politicians, and other individuals who are nominating their candidates for chief justice of the Supreme Court are gravely wrong in the qualities they are looking for in a chief justice, since almost all of them are not even mentioning fear and love of God as primary qualifications.

The names being floated around as nominees which will be considered and screened by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) starting Monday, June 4, 2012, come from highly qualified personalities, academically, intellectually and even politically, but if we are to truly reform the judiciary---which was the supposed intent in ousting Renato Corona in the first place---we must find a new chief justice who has the Spirit of God in him (Genesis 41:38 of the Bible).

This country has already been treated to the spectacle of leaders who are highly qualified and competent, as well as leaders who are ordinary and educational failures, and look where they have brought us: continuing poverty, continuing dissension, and relentless failures. It is time to seek Filipinos who truly and sincerely fear and love God. That is the only way that this country will unerringly move forward.

LEADER WHO FOLLOWS GOD’S RULES: If the leader has fear and love of God in his heart, all his actions will be governed by what God orders and directs to be done---whether God is seen to be the God of the Bible, or the God of the Koran. And far as the God of the Bible is concerned, all His laws and commands can be summed up in only two rules.

In Matthew 22: 37, Jesus, our God and Savior, laid down these two rules: “…`Love the Lord your God will all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: `Love your neighbor as yourself’…”

A leader who loves God with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his mind will not steal, will not abuse, will not oppress others with his position. This leader knows that if will steal, he will abuse and he will oppress others with his position, God’s punishment---which is eternal damnation in hell---will come not only upon him, but even upon his children up to the fourth generation.

CHANGING FILIPINOS’ MINDSET ON LEADERS: And what is more, this kind of a leader will always have the interest of his constituents, whether these constituents be his supporters or the supporters of his political foes, in his heart and mind. All his projects and all his programs---in fact, everything in his governance---will be geared towards the welfare of the people, for that is what loving one’s neighbors means.

Sad to say, almost all of our so-called leaders who were given the opportunity to lead this nation since time immemorial, did not have the fear and love of God in their hearts. Rather, by their actions, only their self-serving and vested interests dictated their governance.

This reality is in fact now enshrined, and unfortunately widely accepted, in an  infamous and notorious political adage which says: “In Philippine politics, there are no permanent friends and enemies, only permanent self-interests”. It is now time to change this mindset, if we are to attain our true destiny as a nation under God, a nation called by His name, and if we are to avoid the death and destruction He promised to those who will disobey Him.
