LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows…” (Isaiah 53:4, the Holy Bible).
A MIRACLE IN HEALTH DELIVERY: A milestone in health care which is a virtual miracle in health delivery is happening in the presidential province of Tarlac: imagine, a patient in a remote area, unable to come to Manila, can now be instantly diagnosed and medically-attended to by doctors from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine in Manila (UP Manila), using computers, laptops, tablets or even cellular phones.
This breakthrough is now made possible through a collaborative effort between the Department of Health, UP Manila, the Tarlac Provincial Health Office and Qualcomm Incorporated, an international mobile technology company. Using a program called “Wireless Access for Health”, the project is empowered to reach out to patients anywhere through the “Mobile Midwife” and “Synchronized Patient Alerts through SMS” (SPASMS) projects.
Mobile Midwife enables data to be captured electronically during patients’ visits via cellular phones, tablets or laptops, and then are instantly sent to a digital medical records system in UP Manila. SPASMS on the other hand is now being used to send medical information to patients, directing them what to do during emergencies. Wow!
PNP PENSION SCAM NOTHING NEW: So what else is new with the pension scam at the Philippine National Police (PNP)? I remember that this kind of fund scam also hit the Armed Forces retirement program several years ago. After a frenzied media reportage, the issue died a natural death, without any of the money taken fraudulently being returned. The same thing will happen with the pension scam at the PNP. Despite the noise, the PNP pension scam will soon blow over, too, and the scammers will be at it again.
LP SENATE BETS RUNNING TO LOSE? The senatoriables of the Liberal Party (LP) are starting off with the wrong foot, with an announcement from Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas, the party president, that LP is not really keen on fielding candidates that are “winnable”. In a media interview, Roxas said: “We will not get candidates just so we can win. The Senate slate will be made up of members that we see are part of our `matuwid na daan’ (straight path of governance).” So, LP Senate bets are running to lose, Mr. Roxas?
SALN CORRECTION AT THE HOUSE: There is something amiss in the committee which House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. created to scrutinize the statement of assets and liabilities and networth (SALN) of congressmen: from the looks of it, the committee’s work is aimed at nothing but correcting erroneous entries in the lawmakers’ SALNs. It would seem the ultimate intention is to present a corrected SALN for each and every congressman. The question is: if the lawmakers’ SALNs could be corrected after they were filed to make them conform to the law, why can't the SALN of others be corrected, too?
REMEMBERING GOD WHILE WE ARE YOUNG: Here are some words of wisdom from Ecclesiastes 12 of the Holy Bible: “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, `I find no pleasure in them’---before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow dark, and the clouds return after the rain…
“… when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men stoop, when the grinders cease because they are few, and those looking through the windows grow dim; when the doors to the street are closed and the sound of grinding fades; when people rise up at the sound of birds, but all their songs grow faint; when people are afraid of heights and of dangers in the streets; when the almond tree blossoms and the grasshopper drags itself along and desire no longer is stirred.
“Then people go to their eternal home and mourners go about the streets. Remember him—before the silver cord is severed, and the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the spring, and the wheel broken at the well, and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it…”
