DA-12 put up Barangay Food Terminals in Central Mindanao

In efforts to put up Barangay Food Terminals (BFTs) in every barangay in the region, the Department of Agriculture 12 through its Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division (AMAD) launched eight newly-established BFTs.

The five BFTs were set up in North Cotabato province namely, Brgy. La Esperanza and Brgy. Tambac, of Tulunan; Brgy. Kalaisan of Kidapawan City; Brgy. Malire of Antipas and Brgy. Liliongan of Carmen. Three other BFTs were put up in Brgy. Upo, Maitum Sarangani; Brgy. Purikay Lebak, Sultan Kudarat and Brgy. Aflek, T’boli, South Cotabato.

These BFTs were formally launched during the Barangay Food Terminal Grand Launching Showcase and Operators Summit held at EMR Convention Center, Koronadal City on Monday. Bai Dido Samama, DA-AMAD chief said, adding it is high time to strengthen BFTs in the region to provide more alternative markets to the farmers.

Aside from opening sources of income for the farmers, the city also said that the BFTs provide quality, fresh, nutritious and affordable food for the locals, Samama said.

The initiative, according to Regional Executive Director Amalia J. Datukan, the BFT is a means to develop the livelihood of the farmers while providing marketing outlets for farmers’ products and the locality it will serve.

“This is the essence of BFT: lagakan ng mga pagkain (food depot) to provide nutritious and affordable food to the community,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of Dir. Leandro Gazmin, Director of the Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service, was Ms. Lenny Pecson who cited the notable impacts of the summit as opportunity-openers for BFT operators.

Recognized in the launch were Gawad Saka Outstanding Regional Barangay Food Terminals: Barangay Poblacion (Non-LGU) and Barangay Pangao-an (LGU), both from Magpet town in North Cotabato.

Highlight of the event was the trade exhibit showcasing the unique products of the five top performing BFTs in the four provinces of Region 12.

Another 15 BFTs are set to be established this year. Todate, there are 89 BFTs operating in Region 12, DA officials said.
