True preparation vs. calamities

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity…” (Proverbs 3:1-2, the Holy Bible).

COJUANGCO GUIDELINES IN SPORTS: Former Tarlac Rep. Jose S. Cojuangco Jr., as president of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), was responsible for initiating and institutionalizing guidelines at the POC that were meant to strengthen sports development in the country, POC records will show.

Among these Cojuangco guidelines: sports is a tool for nation building, so POC officials and sports leaders should not just think of developing a sports or a game but look at how it can make the life of every Filipino better. Also: national sports associations (NSA) must be managed professionally and NSA leaders must be directly involved in their sports’ and athletes’ affairs and welfare.

Another Cojuangco sports guidelines: POC members have to work together as one team and must be aware that their duty is to nation and sport, not just winning medals, since people look up to sports as a source of hope, even if there are those who do not eat three meals a day.

TRUE PREPARATION FOR FILIPINOS TO SURVIVE DISASTERS: I do not think we can blame those living near the seas along the eastern side of the Philippines if they return to where their homes once stood before the 7.9 earthquake rumbled through and destroyed their houses. The reason is not only economic: there is a tie that binds people to their lands and places of abode, and it is not going to be easy breaking off that tie.

What the government must do is to empower our people to be prepared for any eventuality, and I don’t simply refer to evacuation or disaster-mitigation when tragedies strike. What I am referring to is preparing our people spiritually, under the conscious thought that earthquakes, rains, floods and strong winds are deeply rooted in the Bible, which contains specific passages as to their coming, and instructions on how to survive them.

I know this will sound outrageous to many, especially to those whose minds have been darkened by self-belief, by false teachings, by straying away from God too long, but then, at this point when governments around the world have shown themselves too puny and ineffective and unable to do anything, looking at the Bible---and to God---can yet provide a way out of the death and destruction from calamities.

BIBLICAL BASIS FOR EARTHQUAKES, RAINS, FLOODS, WINDS: On earthquakes, the Bible in its Isaiah 13:13 says: “Therefore I will make the heavens tremble; and the earth will shake from its place at the wrath of the Lord Almighty, in the day of his burning anger…” Note that in this verse, the earth will shake from its place because of the wrath of God.

On rains, floods and winds, the Bible in its Matthew 7:26-27 says: “… But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” Note here that rains, floods and winds will destroy those who listen but do not obey.

On global warming and climate change, the Bible in its Deuteronomy 28:15, 22-24, says: “… if you do not listen to the Lord your God and no longer obey Him, these curses will come to you… scorching heat and drought… blight and mildew… sky over your head will be bronze… ground beneath you iron… rain (of)… dust and powder… until you are destroyed…”
