LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands… the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God… The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season…” (Deuteronomy 28:1-2, 12, the Holy Bible).
SEN. LEGARDA MUST LISTEN TO BONG LAPIRA: I don’t know if baritone-voiced and famous radio-TV broadcaster Bong Lapira is still broadcasting these days, but Sen. Loren Legarda and other environmentalists may want to replay and listen to his old broadcasts, especially at the government FM station, DWBR, 104.3 mhz., and derive inspiration on what could yet be the most effective instrument against the death and destruction coming from killer rains, floods and strong winds.
Part of Bong’s regular feature then was his telling a joke about a plane that is about to crash, and its pilot calmly giving out instructions as to what passengers should do. At the end of the instructions, Bong’s imaginary pilot would then air his final directive: “Repeat after me: Our Father, who art in heaven…” Of course, that would always, without fail, elicit much laughter from his listeners, including myself.
GOD’S DIRECTIONS VS. GLOBAL WARMING: What would praying to God, the Father, do to fight the seemingly unstoppable death and destruction brought about by the spate of torrential rains, fast-rising floods and devastating winds that now regularly visit the Philippines even if there are no typhoons or tropical depressions, as we used to experience in the olden days?
To a Bible-believing follower of Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, like me, seeking God’s directions, especially in what He already wrote in the Bible, will equip me with the knowledge that global warming and climate change and all the rains, floods and winds we are experiencing of late, have all been predicted to happen by the Bible, for a reason. Consequently, if a believer would want to escape the wrath of these natural calamities, he has to rely on what the Bible is saying.
INUTILE PROJECTS VS. CLIMATE CHANGE: Indeed, as Sen. Legarda pointed out in an article, the Philippines already have many laws on environmental destruction, such as the Philippine Environmental Impact Statement System, Marine Pollution Control Law, the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, Renewable Energy Act, Environmental Awareness and Education Act, Climate Change Act, the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act, Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Wastes Control Act and the Act Creating the People’s Support Fund.
Unfortunately, however, death and destruction still persist each time the rains, floods, and strong winds come. And the same thing could be said of past and present government projects such as geo-hazard mapping, forced evacuation, disaster-preparedness, water management, and land use. While these efforts may have mitigated death and destruction from calamities, they have largely remained inutile and ineffective.
REVIVING SPIRITUALITY TO FIGHT OFF RAINS, FLOODS, WINDS: Which shows beyond doubt that mere human effort could not properly and effectively address global warming and climate change, and the rains, floods, and strong winds that are spawned by such change in environment.
Filipinos—and all of mankind—should now turn to God, and understand, from His point of view, why all of these things are happening.
For starters, we should read Deuteronomy 28:15 to 68, particularly its verses 22 to 24, in the Old Testament, and Matthew 7:24-25, in the New Testament. These verses are telling us that global warming and climate change, and the rains, floods and winds that result from them, represent God’s curses to man, simply because he has stopped listening to, and obeying, God’s commands.
Therefore, for any government project aimed at fighting off the death and destruction arising from these natural phenomena to even take off the ground, there must be a conscious and deliberate parallel effort to make man return to God, by his reading the Bible once again, and obeying His commands. Put differently, we must all attempt to revive our spirituality and relationship with God while there is still time.
