LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Woe to the sinful nation, a people whose guilt is great, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the Lord; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him…” (Isaiah 1:4, the Holy Bible).
LAWMAKERS MUST SUBMIT LIST OF SCHOLARS & PATIENTS: I am for the partial lifting of the temporary restraining order (TRO) which the Supreme Court issued against further releases of our lawmakers’ pork barrel allocations for 2013, if the objective is to provide the money for the tuition and other school fees of poor students, and to defray hospital expenses of poor Filipino patients.
But then, the lawmakers must first submit the list of the scholars and the patients they are helping with their pork allocations, together with the list of the schools and the hospitals where the students are studying or where the patients are being treated. The schools and the hospitals must confirm the lawmakers’ list. If this list is not submitted, then the Supreme Court TRO should stay.
THE PHENOMENON OF RAINS WITHOUT TYPHOONS: Did you see how the rains kept coming down even when Typhoon Odette already left the country, flooding many parts of Metro Manila? Many will say that this is due to the global warming and climate change phenomenon the world is experiencing right now and they are correct. But, what caused global warming and climate change in the first place?
Whatever, the rains, floods and strong winds despite the absence of a weather disturbance are clear confirmation of the warnings aired by Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, in Matthew 7:24-27 of the Bible. These natural calamities confirm what Jesus said, and they confirm who Jesus really is. It is now time to seriously believe in Him and in His Bible, and see what His antidote is to these calamities.
SOMETHING LACKING IN CJ PUNO’S SPEECH ON PORK: So, may I ask former Chief Justice Reynato Puno: if pork barrel allocations for our lawmakers are evil, what then should the people do to fight it? The lengthy report of his Saturday (21 September 2013) speech before a gathering of Methodist Churches at the Good Samaritan Church in Quezon City failed to cite any course of action that Puno may have asked believers to do to fight the evil of the pork barrel system.
While I can agree to most of what Puno said in that speech before his fellow Methodists, I lament the fact that it was wanting in specifics. I mean, while he said that the pork barrel is an evil practice, and that it is our duty to fight it by engaging it, not running away from it, not escaping from it, fighting it to the finish, he however did not say what must be done to end the abuse of the pork barrel system.
WHAT SHALL WE DO, MR. CHIEF JUSTICE PUNO? Specifically, Puno failed to enumerate the acts that Methodists and fellow Christian believers across the country must carry out to fight pork barrel. This is tragic because, while we can wail and bemoan the pork barrel system as evil, concrete steps must come from the people, especially those who call themselves “Christians”, to bring about the demise of that system.
Maybe the good former chief justice did not notice it, but, as Facebook posts in recent days have shown, the issue against pork barrel abuse had been with us for quite some time, even earning similar banner headline treatments from big newspapers in the 1990s, but the evil continues to this very day. Clearly, nothing will ever happen if we simply moan and castigate, without providing our people with what must be concretely done.
PUNO MUST BRING BACK FILIPINOS TO GOD: I don’t pretend to know more than Puno, but I do have a suggestion: to me, the evil that is the pork barrel system, and all the other evils our country and our people are experiencing now, all come from our people having collectively strayed away from God. Therefore, I propose that Puno should head an interfaith group that will focus on bringing back our people---no matter what their religion maybe---to God, through a sustained study of His Word and sincere obedience to His commands.
