NBI probing judicial corruption: can it be done?

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep…” (1 Corinthians 11:29-30, the Holy Bible).

NBI PROBING JUDICIAL CORRUPTION: CAN IT BE DONE? With due apologies to Justice Secretary Leila De Lima, I don’t think that even the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) can come up with anything concrete to pin down anyone who maybe involved in the reported bribery and corruption of judges and justices by someone named “Madam Arlene”.

Pardon me, but may I restate this once again: no judge, justice or lawyer who maybe participants in the scam would be willing to talk and incriminate themselves. Since the supposed bribery and corruption involve only these personalities, it would be an impossibility even for the NBI to get any information from them. So what do we do, if we want to get to the bottom of these accusations?

I say once again: remove the lawyers from the control of the Supreme Court, remove the Integrated Bar of the Philippines from the control of its justices. I am sure that if Filipino lawyers are longer subject to the control and disciplinary powers of the Supreme Court and its justices, they would fall one over the other in exposing bribery and corruption in the judiciary, if, indeed, there is any. But as long as the Supreme Court can either suspend or remove lawyers, lawyers would remain silent, as they are very silent now.

AVOIDING FOOD POISONING: Food poisoning is a medical phenomenon that is fast becoming to be a regular threat to the health and safety of many Filipinos, as shown by reports from Davao City that 13 employees of Holcim Cement Company from Bulacan who ate seaweeds in the city suffered stomach pain, loose bowel movement, and nausea, last Saturday, 12 October 2013.

Aside from making sure that the food and drinks we partake all the time are safe and clean, which is next to impossible really, the good news is that, there is something that can be done to assure the safety of these food and drinks right away, and it is by consecrating them first. Consecrating means thanking God for the food and drinks every time we eat and drink, and then asking that these food and drinks become for us the body and blood of Jesus, our God and Savior.

This is found in many Biblical verses, among them John 6:48 to 58, 1 Corinthians 11:27-30 and Ephesians 5:20. These verses talk about thanking God, in the name of Jesus, about everything, and then discerning the body and blood of Jesus in the food and drinks we partake, and trusting in His saving power. If we do this, the food and drinks we partake not only become clean, they also unite us with Jesus!

JUSTIFICATION FOR SSS BONUSES: I don’t know why top officials of the Social Security System (SSS) should be rewarded with millions of pesos in bonuses for doing the work they have been mandated to do under the law that created the SSS. Bonuses are supposed to be given for extraordinary achievements and, in the case of SSS, such achievements should be measured in terms of more benefits for its members.

The question that SSS officials should answer, to make them deserving of the bonuses they gave to themselves, is: have there been more benefits for SSS members lately? Are SSS members better served by SSS employees nationwide? Are SSS members enjoying faster processing of their benefits? Are SSS members getting more benefits now? The answer to all these questions is clear: no, SSS members are in no better position now. So, what’s the bonuses for?

TYPHOON TINO, A REMINDER TO RIGHTEOUSNESS: Repeated reminder: there is a new weather disturbance coming in, and it is to be called “Tino”. In Filipino, one meaning of the word “tino” is “a more righteous and disciplined life”, as in, “magpakatino sa buhay”.  This new typhoon therefore reminds us to “have a more righteous and disciplined life” to escape the death and destruction from natural calamities. How do we do this? Read the Bible, meditate on it day and night, and obey all its commands, as Joshua 1:8 is saying.
