LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good…” (Titus 3:14, the Holy Bible).
‘PORK’ ISSUE WILL ALSO BECOME A THING OF THE PAST: Yes, it is correct that the pork barrel issue is far from dead although Filipinos have notoriously short memories, as social media activist Peachy Rallonza Bretana noted in media interviews, and yes, she is also correct that Filipinos are not about to let go of the pork barrel issue because change for the better is not forthcoming yet.
But, how far really can this issue stay alive in the consciousness of Filipinos, even among those who, like Bretana, are fighting tooth and nail, against all odds and even against President Aquino, to remove the pork barrel system at present? In the days to come as in times past, other more compelling and earthshaking events will happen, in the Philippines and around the world, which will push the pork barrel issue out of our collective minds.
When those events take place, and our attention is necessarily diverted to them, the fight against the pork barrel system will, by force of necessity, take a back seat once more, allowing pork not only to stay but even to flourish once more, in the hands of greedy legislators and wicked government officials. Back to square one by then, Peachy Rallonza Bretana?
WHAT CAN BE DONE TO STOP ‘PORK’ PERMANENTLY? So, once more, the question presents itself for resolution: what can Filipinos really do to fight and permanently stop the pork barrel system and, perhaps, all the other ills afflicting the country, its government, its officials, and most if not all of its people, during the present times?
The first step is to realize, urgently and earnestly, that this prevalence of sin and lawlessness in our society today has been predicted to happen. There is a book which contains this prediction and, no matter how big our reservations maybe about the accuracy and legitimacy of that book, it cannot be denied that its predictions are happening as prophesied in its pages.
One particular prophecy reads like this: “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God…”
LACKING ELEMENT IN THE FIGHT VS. ‘PORK’: Another part of this book gives an explanation as to why this will happen: “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.”
Still one other prophecy from the book gives this explanation: “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths…”
What then do we do to address this malady of sinfulness which is the one single reason enabling our people to be corrupt and sinful? Let us all get back to God. Let us listen to Him once more by reading His Word, the Bible. Let us truthfully obey His commands once more. Then and only then will the pork barrel system and sinfulness be done away for good. It is a pity that Bretana is not seeing this.
