LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst…” (1 Timothy 1:15, the Holy Bible).
MOTORCYCLE GUNMAN KILLS FIVE IN QC: What will it take for any person---man or woman---to successively kill, in the most cold-blooded manner possible and without any fear of being caught, five people whose only fault perhaps was to find themselves at the exact spots in Quezon City where the gunman found the urge to kill at will?
That is the question that will now haunt the families of the five people who were shot to death in different places mostly in or around Fairview, Quezon City, in the early morning of May 11, 2014, apparently victims of a senseless thrill killing by someone riding a motorcycle. Authorities have yet to establish the identities of four of the victims as I was writing this column, and the identity of the gunman.
Indeed, how can anyone have the guts, and the stomach, to kill people as if the victims were mere ants or insects that do not have any right to live, and who, at the time of the attack, were unarmed, totally defenseless, and were merely either trying to go home, or already hurrying off to work, or to go some place else, for one reason or another?
ONSET OF EVIL AMONG FILIPINOS: It is no longer enough to simply say there is a breakdown of law and order in the Metro Manila area, and even in the whole Philippines, that is allowing this criminality to even happen in the very seat of political power in our country. It is no longer enough to say that criminals no longer fear the Aquino government, its leaders and officials, particularly the police and the military.
Any right thinking individual will not fail to notice that what is happening now shows something more than a breakdown in law and order. It shows a terrifying onset of evil among many Filipinos---the kind of evil that enables many to commit even the most heinous of crimes without compunction or remorse, without any sense anymore of right and wrong.
Of course, it is clear that this evil mindset did not occur in an instant. Rather, it is the product of continuous exposure to sin and criminality, little by little at first, in one small dose after another, starting from the most innocuous lawlessness like disregarding traffic lights, throwing garbage anywhere, cheating in examinations, discarding good manners and right conduct, and on to bigger crimes like corruption, thievery among government employees, and disbelief in God and in His Bible.
CRIMINAL MIND PREDICTED BY THE BIBLE: As it were, the entire Filipino nation had been set up for crime and criminality through the years. With government and political leaders leading corrupt and scandalous lives, and many religious and spiritual groups discarding honest-to-goodness Biblical doctrines with preaching bordering on pleasurable materialism, it is no wonder that many of us have become criminally-minded at the very least.
What this all amounts to is the situation envisioned by the Bible, in its 1 Timothy 4 and 2 Timothy 3. 1 Timothy 4 says: “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron…”
2 Timothy 3 says: “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God...”
