LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore…” (Psalm 121:7-8, the Holy Bible).

NEW HOPE PERVADES EAST AVENUE MEDICAL CENTER: There is a new sense of hope and well-being which pervades the East Avenue Medical Center, a Department of Health “teaching and training” hospital located at East Avenue, Quezon City, these days.

The reason: not only is the hospital being beautifully refurbished in its facilities. There is also an upsurge of professionalism and pride in belonging to it among its medical and non-medical staff and employees, brought about largely by the enthusiastic, aggressive, and compassionate leadership of its youthful medical director, Dr. Roland Cortez.

And then, under Dr. Cortez’ prodding, hospital consultants and other medical professionals have made themselves fully available to even the poorest of the poor patients, which constitute almost 95 percent of East Avenue’s clientelle. No one in search of medical treatment is turned away by the hospital on account of lack of money, as Cortez made it a policy to help anyone who is in need of medical attention.

PROMOTIONS, BETTER PAY, AWAIT EAST AVENUE DOCTORS, STAFF:At the hospital’s flag ceremony on Monday, June 23, 2014, Cortez gave a reason for joy and professional pride to East Avenue’s doctors and nurses and other employees. He announced that Health Secretary Enrique Ona granted his request to immediately promote doctors, nurses, and other employees, and thereby allow them to be recognized, and receive higher pays.

What was significant here, according to Dr. Cortez, was that, unlike in the past, the promotions he is to effect in the next several days would no longer result in abolishing the positions from where the promoted staff would come.

Previously, when a staff was promoted to a next higher rank, his former position was abolished. This resulted in eroding the lower level positions at the hospital, resulting in a top-heavy administrative hierarchy. As a result of Cortez’ request which Ona granted, new employees could now be hired, resulting in better service to patients.

CONGRATS, DR. CORTEZ: Under Cortez’ directorship of East Avenue, the hospital’s sixth floor has morphed into a highly-modern and spanking unit,  comparable to a first class private hospital anywhere in the country. I went to see for myself the sixth floor, and I was totally awed by what I saw: clean surroundings, walls covered by wall papers, and highly disciplined and courteous staff tinkering with gadgets and instruments.

And then, that was not the only part of the hospital that is getting an upgrade. I went to its emergency room, and, despite the fact that it was filled to the brim with many patients at that time, doctors and nurses were everywhere, busily attending to everyone who had a medical complaint, using first class facilities, this time!

Then, the operating rooms of the hospital are also being modernized. Dr. Maria Veronica Datinguinoo, the chief of East Avenue’s Emergency Department. told me that state of the art operating instruments are now being installed, as shown by a temporary operating room located at the first floor. All I could say was, “Wow! Congratulations, Dr. Cortez and East Avenue, Medical Center.”
