Prayer brigades during typhoons useless

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS:“…`Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is… a wise man… The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock’…” (Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, in Matthew 7:24, the Holy Bible).

PRAYER BRIGADES DURING TYPHOONS ARE USELESS:As I wrote this column on July 16, 2014, Typhoon Glenda’s terribly strong winds were battering the whole of Metro Manila, particularly where I am holding office in Diliman, Quezon City. Text messages, and even Internet postings, flooded through my phones and gadgets, asking everyone once again to start a prayer brigade so God will spare all of us from Glenda’s harm.

These requests to start a prayer brigade against death and destruction from Glenda are actually good, were it not for the fact that, rather than constituting a sincere dialogue with God, the requests actually represented the great hypocrisy of man insofar as his relationship with the Almighty is concerned.

It is clear that during times of danger and calamitous events, many will suddenly remember God and implore His Divine Mercy, to protect, guide, and bless them. Unfortunately, when there is no danger and calamitous event or they shall have come to pass already, nobody remembers God anymore, nobody prays to Him and, what is more significant, nobody listens to His Word and nobody obeys His commands anymore.

DEATH AND DESTRUCTION FROM TYPHOONS TO CONTINUE: This is the reason why the Philippines has concededly become a nation of thieves, plunderers, murderers, gamblers, drug-users, abusers, and peddlers and pushers, pornography-prone, disrespectful, rebellious, immoral, and of the kind of people that 1 Timothy 3 of the Bible said will come during the end of days.

We just have to look around us today to see the fulfillment of 1 Timothy 3, among many Filipinos today: “People (are) lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God…”

Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, and the Prophet Isaiah before Him, both derided these kinds of believers by describing them as people who have “faith only in their lips, not in their hearts”, and will therefore merit judgment and punishment, not blessings, guidance and protection. Unless we realize that God wants each and everyone of us to go back to Him through His Word, death and destruction from rains and floods will continue to come.

BEST PREPARATION AGAINST TYPHOONS: What then is the best preparation—the best defense, if the onslaught of typhoons were a basketball game—against the death and destruction brought about by rains, floods, and strong winds? It is not just a prayer brigade when the rains, floods, and strong winds shall have already come or are already punishing our people. Remember, Jesus said not all who pray to Him, “Lord, Lord” will be listened to.

As I see it, the best defense is a conscientious daily reading of the Bible, coupled with meditations on what we read from it day and night, as well as careful obedience and compliance with the commands of God that we read. Jesus Christ Himself said: the rains, floods, and strong winds will come, and it is only the wise who will be saved from their deadly or destructive effects.

Who are the “wise” who will be unscathed by the rains, floods, and strong winds? Jesus said it is the man who listens to His Word and then obeys or fulfills them. This is the kind of preparation that God wants from all of us, especially from us who profess to be Christians. This is the only defense that will spare us from the death and destruction from rains, floods, and winds.
