“The hunger games”

People are always hungry. We need to eat 3 times a day at least, though some eats more and some eats less than the norm depending on one’s economic status. Not only does food gives nutrients and energy to our bodies to maintain our lives but food, among other things, to some, also fills up their insecurities in life wherein they turn to sustenance to satiate their voids. This is where the “hunger games” begin. It is actually a superficial need created by our psyche that something is amiss in one’s life, such as but not limited to, feelings of rejection, anger, depression, betrayal, disappointments, helplessness, etc. It seems like a devoid of power to overcome one’s purpose in life. No matter what our predicaments in life, doctors, scientists and nutritionist always advised us that in order to have a healthy life, always eat a balanced diet!

Speaking of Power, combined with Fame, are also two of people’s most sought-after hungers in life. People will move mountains to have powers and fame, regardless acquired through legally, morally or otherwise so long as it has a feel-good satisfaction end-result even for just a short duration.

But what really is Power? Power is defined by Wikipedia as “the ability to influence or control the behavior of people.” One can get things done in his or her ways through people either via a positive or a negative impact congruent on the character of the power-user. It’s just like saying; a good leader will positively inspire his people while an evil leader will unjustly treat his people.

In the corporate world, Power could either be “expressed downward or upward” wherein in the downward trend the power emanates from top management influencing the subordinates while in an upward swing, the leader is influenced by the subordinates. Power can come in many faces and forms. Examples of Power are:

1. Legitimate Power. “Also called “Positional power,” it is the power of an individual because of the relative position and duties of the holder of the position within an organization. Legitimate power is formal authority delegated to the holder of the position. This is the most obvious and also the most important kind of power”.

2. Referent Power. “Referent power is the power or ability of individuals to attract others and build loyalty. It is based on the charisma and interpersonal skills of the power holder. A person may be admired because of specific personal trait, and this admiration creates the opportunity for interpersonal influence. Here the person under power desires to identify with these personal qualities, and gains satisfaction from being an accepted follower. Abuse is possible when someone that is likable, yet lacks integrity and honesty, rises to power, placing them in a situation to gain personal advantage at the cost of the group’s position.”

3. Reward Power. “Reward power depends on the ability of the power wielder to confer valued material rewards; it refers to the degree to which the individual can give others a reward of some kind such as benefits, time off, desired gifts, promotions or increases in pay or responsibility. This power is obvious but also ineffective if abused. People who abuse reward power can become pushy or became reprimanded for being too forthcoming or ‘moving things too quickly’. If others expect that you’ll reward them for doing what you want, there’s a high probability that they’ll do it.”

4. Coercive Power. “Coercive power is the application of negative influences. It includes the ability to demote or to withhold other rewards. The desire for valued rewards or the fear of having them withheld that ensures the obedience of those under power. Coercive power tends to be the most obvious but least effective form of power as it builds resentment and resistance from the people who experience it. Threats and punishment are common tools of coercion. Implying or threatening that someone will be fired, demoted, denied privileges, or given undesirable assignments – these are examples of using coercive power.”

5. Expert Power. “Expert power is an individual’s power deriving from the skills or expertise of the person and the organization’s needs for those skills and expertise. Unlike the others, this type of power is usually highly specific and limited to the particular area in which the expert is trained and qualified. When you have knowledge and skills that enable you to understand a situation, suggest solutions, use solid judgment, and generally outperform others, people will have reason to listen to you. When you demonstrate expertise, people tend to trust you and respect what you say. As a subject matter expert, your ideas will have more value, and others will look to you for leadership in that area.”

6. Power of Information or Disinformation. It is said that if a person possesses a lot of information, then, he has the power over those people who needs and wants those information. The lifeblood of any organization is communication wherein information is a vital part without which the organization will stagnate and will go awry. Disinformation is naturally chaotic for any organizations.

7. Power of Connection. This is the most sought-after type of power for people who wants to reign but does not possess any of the 6 earlier-cited types of power. They solely depend on their connection or affiliation to the legitimate power.

So folks, what kind of power do you hunger for? What will satisfy your hunger? How are you going to use your Power? The outcome of your satisfaction lies in your hands. Use it wisely.
