(BY: ALI T. YACUB, AL HJ) (“Try to be clean as much as you are able to verily Allah has based the foundation of Islam on cleanliness; hence, never can a person enter paradise but the clean ones.”
-(Hadith) Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
“The sins of the fathers will be visited upon the children into the third and fourth generations because that normally is the time it takes from birth of an idea to its full maturity when it fills the minds of a new generation and makes them think by it”
-E.F. Schumacher, Small is Beautiful (1993)
ISLAM AND CLEANLINESS
The above “Hadith” of the Holy Prophet on cleanliness is a contradiction to present day muslims. While muslims go into ablution every time they fulfil the five times canonical prayers, and yet, you see whose barangays, compound or even the front yard of their houses-you see no cleanliness as compared to Christian communities. Why? Simple, their culture (tribe), not Islam, did not lay emphasis on cleanliness.
ZAMBOANGA CITY SUFFERS
Zamboanga City suffers on matter of cleanliness. I am not saying that only the muslims are doing all those acts of uncleanliness but what is inconceivable, is that Islam emphasizes on cleanliness. The horror is, that, some of the followers of Islam defy the teachings of their Faith, Paradise is closed for them!

AN ORDINANCE NEEDED?
I have yet to read an Ordinance which requires every department stores in the city, offices or even houses along the streets are required to clean their front yard or space. If there is a Law, maybe we will experience a difference on the city’s cleanliness.
Can we try this, our honorable councilors? I am sure the Mayor will not veto that Ordinance. Who will cry foul on this idea?

WHAT HAPPEN TO THE GARBAGE SUMMIT?
Last year, the City Council talked about a Garbage Summit and Councilor VP Elago was tasked to formulate the mechanics of that Summit, but along the way, it got waylaid by the spoilers. Who will pick up the pieces?

A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE OF EVERY
YEAR IN THE CITY
“The September 2013” Zamboanga Seige” may be described in the city’s history as “days of infamy and remembrance” thus, how Executive Order No. BC 70-2014 opened which narrated the three weeks devastation upon the city caused by the MNLF attacked on the city on that “fateful day of a 9 September 2013” Indeed, it was a calamity of the worse kind and to be recorded in history with such devastation which left 122,226 families displaced, thirty- eight security forces and civilians killed while 266 were wounded, MNLF rebel forces identified with Nur Misuari incurred 133 killed-in-action, while 278 were arrested. They are now facing the bar of justice. The Executive Order of the City Mayor, further narrated. 9, 722 houses burned (that includes the houses of my brothers and sisters in the area of conflict) and destroyed, estimated at Php 200.83 Million.
The Executive Order narrated more statistics, but the Executive Order focused also and stated “As we remember the scars of the infamy caused exactly a year ago, this is also the most appropriate time to honor the heroism, gallantry and valour of the twenty-five (25) brave military and police officers and personnel who laid their precious lives defending the city of Zamboanga, and the democratic ideals and way of life. This is also a time to remember thirteen (13) of our civilians brothers and sisters whose lives were sacrificed by the senseless siege.
In conclusion of the Statement of sympathies and condolences to those who perished in that “infamous siege” the mayor, for history, issued the Executive Order” recognizing and remembering those who sacrificed their lives.
Furthermore, the mayor said, pursuant to Sangguniang Panlungsod of Zamboanga Resolution No. 1019 dated September 2, 2014, I also hereby issue this Executive Order commemorating every September 9 as the “day of Remembrance” of the uneventful “Zamboanga Seige”
A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
The Lady Mayor had spoken through Executive Order enjoining the business sector of the city of Zamboanga, particularly, the major department stores, restaurants, public conveyances, entertainment centers and resorts, to express their solidarity, appreciation and kindness by granting a twenty percent (20%) discount to their customers on September 9 of every year in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives defending the city of Zamboanga and our democratic ideals and way of life.
INTERRELIGIOUS SOLIDARITY FOR PEACE GREGORIAN-HIJRAH CALENDAR 2014 HAD ALREADY “A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE”
Recognizing and remembering those who perished in that “infamous attack” we, in the Interreligious Solidarity for Peace (ISP) had even gone ahead by indicating September 9, 2014 as “A Day of Remembrance”
If you have our calendar you will see it was written ahead of the Executive Order of our Mayor. #
