(BY: ATTY. BATAS MAURICIO) LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies…” (Psalm 60:12, Psalm 108:13, the Holy Bible).
DARK HEARTS, DARK MINDS, AND DEFEAT: Here is a story from somewhere in time. A man aspired to become the leader. Each and everything that he did centered on this ambition. His every being craved to become the leader, his mind dreamt about it day and night, his words spoke his burning desire, and all his acts focused on his being leader, one day.
This aspiration consumed him so much that he started weighing his chances of becoming leader. Yet, he realized there were things—and relations—in his life that could prevent the realization of his dream. He knew he had to do something about these things and relations, so they will not prevent him from becoming the leader. So he called his closest advisers and conferred with them.
The verdict on what to do was not unexpected. Since the ambitious man had a dark heart, those he gathered around him naturally had dark hearts, too. And so, scheming with their darkened hearts and minds, they decided to ruthlessly eliminate the things and persons they perceived as obstacles to the man’s becoming a leader. Yet, the man not only was deprived of a chance to become the leader. He also lost to a totally unknown contender when he ran to become a second leader.
REBUKE FOR THE IMPURE: The moral of this story is much more than the truth that those who have dark hearts and minds will surely be unable to crown themselves with victory. The truth is that there is a God who sees man’s innermost thoughts and hidden desires, a God who cannot be mocked, a God who will always rebuke those who are impure. Those who have ears ought to listen and those who have eyes ought to see.
HOPE FOR MAR ROXAS FROM PNOY, LP: I can see that, somehow, somewhere, there is still hope for Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas to become the presidential candidate of the Liberal Party (LP) in 2016 and win in that election, despite the low ratings he is getting from surveys and despite the evident bad press he is getting, from mainstream and online media.
Just the other day, President Aquino came out with a startling statement which totally ignores the recent surveys showing Roxas even sliding down more tremendously as a choice of the people. Aquino said we should not count Mar out yet despite these surveys, because elections are still far away. It may happen that Mar yet stage a rebound, the President added.
Then, LP’s acting president, Transportation and Communications Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya, chimed in, saying that their party is now working ways to make Mar more acceptable to the people and thereby gain their votes in 2016.
WHY ARE PNOY, ABAYA CONFIDENT OF MAR’S CHANCES? The question, of course, is this: will President Aquino’s anointing of Roxas, and LP’s efforts to prop Mar up among the voters, increase Mar’s chances of winning? From where I sit as a radio broadcaster (see programs and schedules below) and as a columnist of newspapers in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, I believe that Aquino’s anointing and LP’s efforts may no longer produce any beneficial effect at all.
Why, Aquino himself and the LP have already lost their grip among the people, the grip that made him win in 2010, as per official results. In fact, even if Aquino is allowed to run again in 2016, he will already find it difficult to win in a fair election. So, where does the confidence of Aquino and Abaya come from about Roxas? Not from some left-handed schemes, like using the precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines, right?
