(BY: ATTY. BATAS MAURICIO) LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS:“… For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse…” (Romans 1:20, the Holy Bible).
“WHY YOU DON’T NEED GOD”, A FLAWED CNN ARTICLE:There is an interesting, although highly flawed, article in the online January 12, 2015 version of Cable News Network (cnn.com) which is headlined “Why you don’t need God”, purportedly written by one Ryan Bell, allegedly a pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church for 19 years before he resigned in 2014.
This article can be accessed at this link: http://edition.cnn.com/2015/01/08/opinion/bell-god-atheism/index.html. Its main thesis, as Bell himself wrote, is: there is a very real possibility that God does not exist. He argues that by acknowledging the absence of God, he managed to refocus on how wonderful life is, making him desire to experience more happiness and pleasure.
Bell then points out that “life does not need a divine source in order to be meaningful” and that anyone can make meaning from the experiences of his life. What are these experiences that give meaning to life? He cites two of them too: seeing a “breathtaking sunset, or falling in love with another human being.”
IF THERE ARE CREATIONS, THERE IS A CREATOR, RIGHT? He then concludes: “Free from false expectations we are free to create purpose, share love, and enjoy the endless beauty of our world.” Unfortunately, however, Bell did not deal with who or what created the world he talked about, and who or what gave it its endless beauty. He did not also say who or what made the breathtaking sunset, or how one person could fall in love with another.
I say this is unfortunate because while it is true that every human being can create his own meanings from the experiences of his life, the undeniable fact remains that the meanings can be created only from the experiences of the material things in this world. Now, who or what created these material things in this world?
Surely, the breathtaking sunset is made possible only because there is a sun that sets in the western horizon. But who or what created the sun, and the western horizon where it sets? Who or what enabled the sun to set, after it has risen from the east? Then, about falling in love, didn’t a popular song already ask, how is it that two people manage to find and then fall in love with each other? By mere accident?
MAN HIMSELF PROVES THERE IS GOD: The point here is that, there is so much in this world that cannot be explained except by looking at the power of creation by Someone (or, perhaps, even by “Something”). Surely, the sun, the world, the people who found time to fall in love with one another, were all created. And the amazing thing about all these is that, there is a deliberate design in all creation which rules out any notion of accidental “coming into being” by anyone or anything.
Let’s take a look at man, for example. While the billions of people around the world are unique and absolutely different from one another, even if they happen to be fraternal twins, it is totally wonderful that all of them sport the same design. And if we are to extend this a little bit more, this design that makes up mankind is the same basic design in all animals around us.
Undeniably, this is the work of a superior, intelligent, and all-knowing Being (with a capital “B”, for, surely, a Being that can create man and animals using the same design is a “Being” that is far more superior, intelligent, and capable than ordinary humans and animals). Man’s existence alone in this planet proves there is a God from whom he owes his existence, and in whom he owes eternal gratitude and praise.
