(BY: BRO. PAENG SANTOS) Poverty may be the greatest adversity that could befall you. Surprisingly, your worst adversity may be prosperity – a difficult trial dressed in designer sheep’s clothing. Someone once said, “Adversity is sometimes hard upon a man, but for one man who can stand prosperity, there are a hundred that will stand adversity.”
Why? Because few people being promoted up the ladder of success are able to maintain their spiritual equilibrium. The dizzying heights of prosperity often lead to pride and then a fall.
The Bible, in 2 Samuel 15:1-6 is an example of someone who could not handle a promotion. When King David appointed his most handsome but rebellious son Absalom to a leadership position, Absalom used it to steal the hearts of the people so he could overthrow his own father. Rather than use his position to help shepherd the people, Absalom use his privileges to feed the greedy desires of his own heart. Subsequently, Absalom was defeated and killed. Yes, greed and pride always lead to disaster.
In our country today many cry out for unity and to care for each other in the name of peace. The MILF projects peace by seeking promotion for their people through the approval of the BBL. Nevertheless, there are still many leaders who don’t think twice about running roughshod over everyone to accomplish their objectives. And now we have the fallen 44.
Gen. Espina cries out: “It is overkill!” And some members of Congress now ask: “Where is now the sincerity of the intent for genuine peace?” OPAPP insist to approve the BBL. They don’t seem to know the truth of the Mamasapano incident? And so the spokesman of the MILF declared: “We trust on the President”.
We trust on the President, says the MILF. Their confidence to succeed and achieve their promotion is with the President. To me, personally, it’s like reminding the President to keep his promise. Stay on our side. What you see in the Mamasapano incident is just a tip of a sunken volcano. Don’t be afraid Mr. President. Join us to prevent and stop a major eruption.
With the noblest of intentions, my humble message to the President is this: Government is instituted by God and the authorities are ordained by God (Romans 13:1). Mr. President, freedom is not our right to do as we please but the liberty to do as we ought. The exercise of prerogatives and discretion if not morally guided may constitute a misuse and abuse of authority. Let integrity and honesty control the atmosphere and situation in the performance of your duty. It’s not what people might think or say or so to you, but rather what God might think or say or do unto you. This country doesn’t need another wheelchair president.
At this point, allow me to return to promotion. The Bible, from a few telling verses of Psalm 75, one thing is clear – and it forged a timeless truth as indicated hereunder:
“Do not lift up your horn on high,
Do not speak with insolent pride.”
For not from the east, nor from west,
Nor from the desert comes exaltation;
But God is the judge;
He puts down one, and exalts another. (vv. 5 – 7)
Promotion is from the Lord’s goodness. It does not come primarily because a person is in the right place or at the right time or because someone is more gifted, educated, or trained than another. Promotion comes because God in His goodness says, “I wish to exalt you at this time.” Demotion is tough, but surviving a promotion can even be tougher. It does not matter, really, how great the pressure is, and it only matters where the pressure lies. See that it never comes between you and the Lord.
To desire to be in a place of great significance and responsibility is selfish and carnal. The great need today is not just for more leaders but for uncompromising godly leaders in all levels of leadership, in all levels of society. “Vaya Con Dios” says our beloved Mayor of Zamboanga Hermosa. We need leaders who seek to walk before God in integrity regardless of the promotion or pressure. For whatever, whichever, God is the only viable option we have.
