Average of 10 accidents a day

(BY: REV. BERLIE G. YAP) Barangay eMedia’s ace of the entertainment department, Totoy Bato, went to PS-11 few days ago, particularly at the traffic division, to confirm some data on our motorists in the City. The information is quite a shocking revelation. It is something which our drivers must take serious considerations as to avoid the spill of unwanted blood and, worse, the loss of lives in City’s our roads.

Accordingly, there are at least 10 road accidents, as an average, in our City every day. Most of the time, they are single motorcycle and are driven by young people. The same information also reveals that 70% of whose accidents are due to overtaking drivers, who are carelessly not minding their counter flow at their opposite lanes.

Such data is a bad news to our parents. If you’re a mother, will that just be okey for you if you’re son may break a bone or indeed loss his very life? The answer is absolutely no! But this story is repeated almost every day in our City streets just at our nose. Indeed, the recent data is pretty alarming.

Few days ago, a certain duo, youths, passed Barangay eMedia to get shots at the station’s exhibit of the Vinta Bras’, which is the creation of the Ciudad Medical as their advocacy on breast cancer, using their cellular phones, you know selfie stuffs. Both were very happy while clicking their phones’ cameras.

Then they soon left. However, only few meters, they skid along Boalan. They got few bruises, thanks goodness though that nothing worse did happen to them.

Our City’s streets are narrow. More vehicles are increasing in number each year in La Bella. On rush hours, many are unstoppably on a hurry to reach home or their desired destinations, especially the youths. Now, repeated scenarios are happening every day for either a head-on collision or any form of vehicular accidents in the road.

What can our authorities do but to enforce the law in a stiffer manner so as to preserve more lives of our youths! Say for example the law on wearing helmets for the single motorcycle drivers. Many hate it because they are a usual inconvenience if one is on a hurry, and not to mention the “pogi points” factor.

When the same drivers run within a 60-80 kph in the highway without helmets, then come unsuspecting accidents happen along, definitely results will be broken skulls. How do you think can this prevailing problem amongst our drivers in Zamboanga to be addressed or really be solved?

The loss of things to some extend can just be bearable, but not the loss of lives. As they say, things can just be produced back but never a human life. There how many promising youths who met their last to a supposed can-be-avoided accidents if precautionary measures were undertaken?

Undeniably, the single motorcycle is now the cheapest vehicle on maintenance and the most convenient way for accessibility in Zamboanga. But at the same time, the present data are very scary. Barangay eMedia would like to encourage parents to talk to your children, and never be tired to always remind them to be extra cautious in the road while driving.

Life is beautiful. It’s worth it to be celebrated every day to the fullness of our lives here on earth. Folks, let us not die prematurely and wastefully. Let’s enjoy this gift, which is called life, every day until we grow old and without a scratch we obtain from any accident.

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say[a] to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91:1-2, ESV)
