(BY: ATTY. BATAS MAURICIO) LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. My people, your leaders and officials lead you astray; they turn you from the path…” (Isaiah 3:12, the Holy Bible).
ASSESSING EDSA 1 ON ITS 29TH YEAR: The year 2015 is going to be the 29th year anniversary of the so-called People Power EDSA 1 Revolution in the Philippines. It might as well be the best year to assess whether the so-called peaceful uprising that saw the ouster of President Ferdinand Marcos really benefited the country or not.
After 29 years of EDSA 1, has the country moved forward or gained economic success? Have the majority of our people improved their lives? Have we seen better infrastructures, better government service, and better government officials? Or, notwithstanding 29 years of EDSA 1, the country is still insulted with labels like “third world country”, “developing tiger economy”, “sick man of Asia”?
Yes, many perceive the current President Aquino as “clean” (whatever that means, considering the wanton illegal disbursement of government funds through the so-called Priority Development Assistance Fund and Disbursement Acceleration Program at his instance, as the Supreme Court has ruled), but has he delivered on the promises of EDSA 1?
EDSA SHOULD NOT BE A CAUSE OF JOY FOR FILIPINOS: My belief is that EDSA 1 and 2 should not be a cause for joy for Filipinos, if we look at these two events from the point of view of the Bible. If we are to go strictly by what the Bible says, uprisings and rebellions against duly-established leaders like President Marcos and President Estrada violently violate Biblical admonitions against rising up against officials of government.
The Bible tells us that everyone should subject themselves to the governing authorities, for there is no authority that God did not establish. It was God who established these authorities, and so rebelling against them constitutes fighting against what God has established.
Indeed, rebellion against the authorities is a serious offense as far as God’s Bible is concerned. Rebels are bound to suffer curses and punishments coming from God. And what is more unfortunate about this is that, the curses and punishments will not be solely for the rebels alone, but for the people who will support them as well.
PRAY FOR LEADERS, NOT OUST THEM: What should a people who believe their leaders are oppressing them and causing them hardships do? Pray for them, that is what, and not oust them, even by virtue only of so-called bloodless revolutions. Pray that the erring leaders will see the light and change their ways. Pray that God will protect the people who are subjects of these errant leaders.
People who are compelled to suffer because of inept, incompetent, and thoroughly incapable leaders should also learn and strive to know and carefully obey God’s will which, at this point, can only be found in His Word, the Bible. By knowing and carefully obeying God’s will, not only will the people change themselves towards righteousness. They will also compel a change towards righteousness among their leaders.
The truth is that, leaders and top officials of government become grafters, corrupt, plunderous, and abusive, if they know that their constituents are themselves wayward, godless, and self-seeking. If these leaders and officials will however see that people are moving towards righteousness, a similar change will come upon them. This is the real change that any other EDSA, in 2015 or beyond, should aspire for.
