Purisima did not lie, somebody else did!

PNOY’S LOW REGARD FOR FILIPINOS: Really, the latest turn of events in the Mamasapano, Maguindanao massacre of 44 officers and men of the Special Action Force (SAF) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) could only confirm once more the very low regard that the current Aquino government has for the Filipino people.

It is clear that the prevailing thinking, from President Aquino down to his allies in the two houses of Congress, is that, anything that Aquino says, particularly on the Mamasapano murders, no matter how incredible it could be, will be accepted and believed by all as the gospel truth, since he remains highly popular and credible among a big number of Filipinos.

Consequently, Malacanang expects that its recent spin on the brutal killing of the 44 policemen from the SAF—that resigned PNP Chief Gen. Alan Purisima lied to the President when he said that help from the Armed Forces was already being given to the SAF commandos while they were fighting for their lives on January 25, 2015—will one again be accepted by the people, and hence would already absolve the President of any liability over the incident.

CAN PURISIMA LIE TO AQUINO ON MAMASAPANO? But then, will anyone really believe that Purisima, who literally owes much of his life as a top police officer to Aquino, could lie and give Aquino deliberately wrong information on a matter as grave and deadly and, come to think of it, even as juicy as the Mamasapano operation which carried a reward money of some US $7 million for its successful conclusion?

Will anyone really believe that Purisima could afford to lie to a President who desperately wanted to use the arrest or killing of Marwan to prop up not only his administration but even his campaign for a Nobel Peace prize? The way I see it, there are many things that do not add up in all the claims that Purisima lied to Aquino, or in Purisima’s acceptance of sole responsibility for the Mamasapano massacre.

For one, the admitted fact is that the President had never been coy in showing that he had great interest in the arrest or killing of Marwan. On many occasions, he took time out to discuss how to take out Marwan, and one of these occasions even took place in Malacanang on January 09, 2015, where former SAF commanding general Getulio Napenas and another PNP officer were in attendance.

PURISIMA DID NOT LIE, SOMEBODY ELSE DID! Then, it has become very clear by now that the US had a direct hand and participation in the plans to go after Marwan, and, later, even in the actual Mamasapano operation itself. In fact, the US even had to come up with a hefty bounty for Marwan’s head, indicating its burning interest to neutralize the bomb expert at all cost.

Purisima was certainly aware of these considerations. He knew he was dealing with two important personalities here—the President, and the US officials who were in on the plan against Marwan, so that he definitely knew the importance of being truthful about what was happening. He knew that not only his return as a PNP chief was at stake, but even his entire life was.

Given the foregoing, there was no way that Purisima could have dared to lie, or volunteered any wrong information on the Marwan operation. As a seasoned police officer who was involved in other equally sensitive police operations in the past, he knew he would be found out real soon, if he lied about anything. It is therefore indubitable that it was not Purisima who lied about Mamasapano—somebody else did, to evade liability.
