Summer crisis

(BY: REV. BERLIE G. Y AP) This has been for quite some time already, when summer comes, that Zamboanga goes through a power insufficiency and a low of water supply, thus creating a temporary crisis resulting to rationing of both commodities to the locals, until the rainy season returns. Many of us are witnesses and do experience them perennially.

This problem must be addressed with a long term solution otherwise every Zamboangueño will continue to ail every single year. On Monday evening, March 3, in a national TV, an anchor mentioned the water rationing in Zamboanga plus its daily power outage from 2-4 hours sectionally. Hence, the entire country is now aware, too, of what we are going through here, even early as March—at least a month yet before the real summer.

Anyways, after all, it ain’t just our City who is starting to experience the long drought but many provinces and cities already in the Philippines. Ones of those who also are directly affected are our farmers, particularly rice farmers, whose rice paddies are either feed only by rain water or by irrigation.

The present drought will drag to more than two months yet, that means this ordeal will be that long too. Nobody can be directly blamed of this, because our odd is a natural phenomenon. When mother earth fumes its fury because of our irresponsiveness, then all of us will be affected and suffer.

ZAMCELCO is, accordingly, doing its utmost ability to acquire the needed power deficiency of our City. The real score is, it will be two more years before that coal plant in the West Coast can start to operate to permanently augment our deficient supply of cheap electricity from the Maria Crisitina hydro power.

Engr. Ledesma and his administration are actively and visibly solving the power impasse in Zamboanga, however, there is really that limitations which Barangay eMedia believes that every member consumer must be patient and understand temporarily. The power crisis this summer is not only remote in our City but is even felt in Metro Manila and the entire Luzon.

With regards to our water, despite that La Bella though has now a low water pressure, yett it does not mean that we don’t have enough water. Thank God, Zamboanga is blessed with many water sources. Our City is endowed by God with plenty of water. However, our real problem then is we don’t have the equipments which can process our raw water and mechanize its inexhaustible supply to our households.

Don’t you know that anywhere in Zamboanga, one can drill a hole and easily tap water from the ground, this not to mention our more than a dozen of rivers in the City! The Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD) said that the second problem of the company is the needed funds to totally rehabilitate older pipes and machineries which have been there for more than half a century already.

Development in the 21st century is a fast paced one, our government and its agencies need to make-up to the changes despite of the scarcity of funds. Anyways, partners and friends, these adjustments are only temporary. Relatively, ZCWD is mustering also its flexes and brains to fully supply the water insufficiency of our City.

Patience is a virtue. Let’s see if every Zamboangueño has it! We may quarrel either the ZAMCELCO or the ZCWD, but what can it do to address the natural phenomenon of the global warming and the absence of the needed resources? Another thing, when both entities impose additional charges of our bills because they must buy expensive supply from private firms as the only recourse, Baranggay eMedia believes that we ain’t to complain.

“Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world.” (Phil. 2:14-15, KJV)
