(BY: ATTY. BATAS MAURICIO) LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves…” (Romans 13:1-2, the Holy Bible).
BOYCOTT THE TV PROGRAMS, PERIOD! To those who are expressing disgust over some television programs aired in major networks, be careful not to mention the programs when you criticize them. When you do, you are giving those programs added mileage, which will naturally prompt more people to watch them. Just express your disgust, period. Then boycott the programs you detest!
WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR EDSA 1 REVOLUTION? So, who really was responsible for bringing about the now world-famous EDSA 1 People Power Revolution, considering the publicized conflicting claims of a self-confessed “father and founder” of the Reform the Armed Force Movement (RAM), and the denial of a group of RAM leaders whose members now claim that this supposed “father and founder” was never really RAM’s “father and founder”?
But whatever maybe the truth about RAM, it is clear from many accounts that then presidential candidate Corazon C. Aquino was a mere beneficiary of their “revolution” in 1986 and was never really its prime mover, and certainly, there were other personalities who could claim rightful credit for the success of the revolution which inexorably changed this nation’s history.
But, could the EDSA 1 Revolution have succeeded in ousting President Marcos if the US did not agree to oust him? Yes, RAM officials may have plotted, planned, and deliberated on ousting Marcos. Yes, then PC INP Chief Fidel Ramos and then Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile may have risked their lives by publicly separating from Marcos. But could Marcos have agreed to leave without US pressuring him to do so?
WERE EDSA 1 & 2 VIOLATIVE OF GOD’S WILL? But whoever or whatever was the real originator of EDSA 1, the real issue there was this: in revolting against Marcos, was the Filipino people obeying God’s will? In other words, was fighting the duly-constituted authority at that time in accordance with the rule of God?
I am concerned about obedience to the rule of God in the rebellion against Marcos because it is clear that the avowed objectives of that rebellion—bringing about change that would benefit the country and the people, to make life more successful for them under a regime of righteous government leaders—were tragically not met.
Filipinos failed to achieve the promises of EDSA 1 (and even those of EDSA 2), not only under the leadership of those who immediately assumed power after Marcos was ousted, but even under the leadership of those who succeeded Corazon C. Aquino. In fact, 29 years after EDSA, the Philippines remains a very poor country, and Filipinos remain to be hard-up and living difficult lives, while corrupt leaders, in the company of favored foreigners, are whooping it up.
EDSA 1 AND 2 WERE FAILURES: Indeed, EDSA 1 (and even EDSA 2) were bound to fail, as they in fact miserably and utterly failed, in their declared objectives. Truly, these two aberrations in Philippine history benefitted only those who came to power after they were successfully carried out and their cronies, not only leaving millions of Filipinos to suffer in their usually difficult lives but in graver poverty and abuse by others.
Why was this so? Because, according to God’s rules, no one is permitted to rebel against the authorities, because there is no authority which was not established by God Himself. Consequently, anyone who fights duly constituted authorities are fighting God, and are set up for punishments, both in this life and in the life hereafter.
