Hundred of houses razed

(BY: REV. BERLIE G. YAP) It is just few days before the Holy Week.  A second bad news bothered the entire Zamboanga City two days ago, March 25. Tens of houses near up at the Lumbangan Dumpsite were razed to the ground. The fire suddenly went uncontrollable, that due to the already drying of every combustible material because of the long drought, thus easily razed down anything it passed.

Including a number of pets and domestic animals were also incinerated. Houses were then beyond recognition. The scenario after the fire-off is very horrifying. These same families are mostly garbage scavengers who opted to stay close to the dumpsite to be able to easily secure or gather their only meager source of living, the recyclable garbage.

Now they are again denied, suddenly robbed of their only handful assets, which they gradually and hardly saved overtime. Due to the critical supply of our water this time in the Zamboanga City Water District, every fire we could hear around is a tough situation for our firemen to overcome.

Beside of the coverage Barangay eMedia took during the entire time of Lumbangan fire, the management also right away opened up for willing donors to help the fire victims. With no adieu, many nearby families didn’t hesitate to extend in any way possible helps, just to fill the first needs of the latter.

Used clothing, NFA rice, groceries, mineral water and etc just came flooding at the station. Certain businesses and companies did also drop few stuff, while anonymous individuals handed certain hundreds of pesos as their humble donations. It is how Zamboangueños help each other in times of need.

Yesterday at “Combersa! Quo Ba?”, Mayor Beng surprised the hosts Partners Philip Abuy, Liza Jocson and GM Belsie Agustin by showing up in the live program wearing her army reserved uniform together with the guests as also an American US Army and a PNP-SAF officers.

Mayor Beng announced in the program that she intentionally passed Barangay eMedia to invite the said guest officers to join her to climb to the fire victims in Lumbangan. Within these few days, our good Mayor is indeed challenged with a lot of unexpected crisis.

The entire City somehow does appreciate her priceless concerns and right away active responses each time. It is how leaders are supposed to be. Elections are still over a year ahead, but true servant-leaders work without a mixture of self-serving motives in their endeavors.

We would like to re-iterate that we ought to double our cautions in keeping our homes, officers, business establishments and etc. from fire. Unplug unnecessary wires from the electric connections when not used, especially this seemed usual culprit of easy-causing fire—home flat irons, after using it, never ever to forget to unplug it.

When you light candles, because of the number of daily outages these days, don’t place them close to curtains or to any combustible materials. Offense is the best defense, one athlete says. Hope the fire statistics won’t be that high this year. Expectedly, the long summer may cause more damages as the days will roll hitherto.
