Minor Boys Hacked Our Accounts

PDFPrintE-mail

It was early of last week that our tech department reported to the management that our official email and Facebook accounts were hacked. Thus, there were raw footages and other details of our news’ contents, in those couple of days, were simply compromised due to the incident. So, the following day, Barangay eMedia reported such incident to the NBI office, to its cybercrime department.

Then, there was a subsequent operation which was conducted by agency. Entrapped and arrested along were minor boys from Tugbungan, and their ages ranged between 16-17 years old. They also admitted that they intentionally did the destructive hacking. When they were given a laptop, and told to demonstrate how they did it, even the barangay captain of Tugbungan could not believe or was rather impressed—as to how fast their fingers were to manipulate the keypad.

They something used an online application to hack our accounts. Accordingly, they only tripped Barangay eMedia; that they always heard about the real time news of the station, and also the personality of partner Kap Fred Atilano. Thus, such gave them the raw interest to explore to what the contents were of our email and Facebook accounts.

At first, our tech department suspected that the culprits were foreigners then, like from Nigeria or India. In the online world, these are the particular countries who are pretty notorious in intruding social network accounts. All the while, when we reported it to the proper authorities, we were astounded instead that the actual hackers were only almost neighbors to our station.

Well, if you may estimate, barangays Tugbungan and Divisoria are only neighbors. In fact, a new road construction is now to be completed such as connecting the two barangays, via Barigon through Duncaan, of Boalan. Besides, the signal of Barangay eMedia is also strong amongst the communities in Tugbungan. Hence, it wasn’t a wonder why those minors got so much interested to intrude the accounts of our station.

There was a confrontation which happened at the barangay hall of Tugbungan, with the parents of the minors. Then, the latter were turned over to the CSWD. Because the culprits are then minors, we thus could not file any criminal action against them. We really pitied them. After all, they are only young kids who became curious and braved to challenge new things which were beyond their capacity to bear. But, by all means, what they did were all wrong and criminal in nature.

Candidly, it raised the level of our awareness to the reality of the crime of hacking. Such are indeed real! The management of Barangay eMedia, after the incident, soon endeavored more measures to brace its online accounts. The tech department was even enjoined to apply better and stronger securities. We are thankful though that the trespassers were only curious minors, and not any professional hackers.

It was just unknown to the public, that on that same night of the hacking, all of the men and women of Barangay eMedia were informed, even in the middle of the night,to deactivate temporarily their email and Facebook accounts, because the tech department was suspecting that the hackers were exploring then other accounts than the station’s accounts. Imagine, the kind of inconvenience it brought to all of us.

There were news details which would have to be retrieved then through other online software or applications, so that those needed information could be reported and presented then the following day. One of our field reporters who was annoyed more was partner Joseph Zosobrado, because it was him whose news details were mostly affected. Thus, when the NBI endeavored their operation, partner Joseph asked to join and to personally see the personalities of the hackers.

But when they were already brought to the barangay hall of Tugbungan, for the needed confrontation, instead of anger partner Joseph felt an unexpected pity to them. The latter remarked that the ages of the boys were only as of the age level also of his sons. Impliedly, the Barangay eMedia did already leave them to the discretion of the CSWD, as to what they may employ for the necessary punishment to their actions, rather than they be put into prison.

“A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—the Most High, who is my refuge— no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.” (Ps. 91:7-12, ESV)
