They Conquered the Local Grassroots

PDFPrintE-mail

The Partido Demokratiko Pilipino- Lakas Ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) did a momentous consolidation yesterday—April 19, here in the City. Such was the biggest local event or news yesterday. No less than the Speaker of the House, Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez, and other big names of the party were actually in the City yesterday. The said event was conducted in the Royce Hall, Grand Astoria Hotel, in downtown.

According to former City Councilor Atty. Mel Sadain, who is also a member of the PDP-Laban party, the prime reason why the great consolidation yesterday was because of the determination of the Duterte administration to push for the amendment of the present Constitution, as to give way to the Federal form of government.

Indeed, PDP-Laban has now gone to penetrate the very grassroots of our society. Seen during the consolidation were barangay leaders of Zamboanga City, who took their mass oaths, as new official members of the party. Around too was Cong. Celso Lobregat. The latter is openly known as a big supporter to Pres. Duterte, and he also had taken his oath last year to PDP-Laban, in Davao City.

The other La Bella’s congressman, Rep. Mannix Dalipe was in Manila yesterday. But Barangay eMedia was able to get a personal phone interview with him, during the Conversa, Quosa Ba—the morning primetime program of partners JV Faustino and Liza Jocson. We asked Dalipe about his views or opinions of the gathering of the PDP-Laban in Zamboanga City, because he is also a member of the party.

His reply baffled and left partners JV and Liza wondered for a while to what Dalipe meant then. Well, the latter said that to him partisan is notanymore the bigger issue in the present political trend in the country, so that to wherever a politician may belong, his ultimate loyalty is not already to the party, but to his personal plans and political interests.

Dalipe’s answer was straightforward and simple, albeit it implied some not-too-easy thoughts to assimilate to the general audience yesterday, during the said TV/radio program in Barangay eMedia. Maybe, the man was just candid. Notably, Lobregat and Dalipe had been worse rivals in the past, but due to the recent political change which started at the assumption of Duterte to power, the two did becomeunintentional party-mates!

Yesterday, it was pretty obvious that Lobregat plays a great role in the PDP-Laban. Now, here is the not so new question, which raced again to the minds of many Zamboangueños yesterday: is the catapult of Lobregat to the PDP party’s limelight a signal for such a great local bout then on the 2019 elections? Barangay eMedia is simply meaning thepossible head-to-head clash of Lobregat versus Climaco!

Anyhow, here are the apparent ironies of the two—Lobregat belongs to the Duterte’s camp, while Mayor Beng is also a high profile member to the Liberal Party (LP), the arch contender of the Duterte administration. By virtue of membership, the former must also be for the change of the Constitution and for federalism. Whereas, the latter is probably not for it, simply because the LP is the opposition of the administration’s platforms.

Well, quite early yet to predict stuffs. But, the recent massive swearing-in of the La Bella’s barangay officials was a sure signal that something big was aligned then yesterday. Although, whether local or national, politicians do not openly admit that such PDP-Laban’s gathering was at the same time a strategic endeavor for the coming 2019 elections; but their actions did absolutely speak louder than their words.

Everyone knows that in as far as the Philippine politics is concerned, the present stronger party is the controlling party. Clearly, this is what Dalipe meant on our interview with him yesterday. Notwithstanding, his words were just veryhonest to reveal early the shallow loyalty of politicians nowadays. Let’s see then what to transpirein the following days, because it seems that the real political adrenalin in Manila and in Zamboanga City has just started to warm-up. In other words, more surprises may happen yet ahead. So, we remain to cross our fingers.

“House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger. Whoever keeps the commandment keeps his life;he who despises his ways will die.Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed. Discipline your son, for there is hope;do not set your heart on putting him to death.”(Prov. 19:14-18, ESV)
