Paul and Peter confirm that Jesus is God and Savior

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours: Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord…” (2 Peter 1:1-2, the Holy Bible).

PAUL AND PETER CONFIRM THAT JESUS IS GOD AND SAVIOR:The Bible in its entirety contains many proofs that Jesus is God and Savior, and is in fact God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These proofs are offered by its different verses, both in the Old and the New Testaments. Today, I wish to dwell on the verses attributed to Paul and Peter that confirm the divinity of Jesus.

As every Christian should know by now, Paul was a Jewish lawyer who was born in the Roman city of Tarsus. Although he was called Saul at the time that he was persecuting Christian believers, he was at the same time known as Paul, his Roman name. He started being referred to as Paul after his conversion, most specially when he was already preaching Christ to the Gentiles.

Paul wrote the Book of Titus in the New Testament, and in Titus 2:11-13, he wrote “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say `No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,  while we wait for the blessed hope—-the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ…”

“GOD” AND “SAVIOR” IN PAUL’S WRITINGS REFER ONLY TO JESUS:The meaning of these verses should be clear, particularly its reference to Jesus Christ as God and Savior. Many of those who oppose the divinity of Jesus, however, say that Paul actually referred to two “persons” in these verses, the “great God”, and the “Savior Jesus Christ”.

But Paul’s reference to only one “person” in these verses—to Jesus as being both the great God and Savior all rolled into one—is actually not the only of its kind in the Bible, because such a reference to Jesus as God and Savior is actually shared also by the Apostle Peter.

In 2 Peter 1:1, 1:11, 2:20, 3:2 and 3:18, Peter used the same sentence construction as that used by Paul in Titus 2:11-13 in refering to Jesus as God and Savior. In all these,  Paul and Peter were using a language that can only be applied to the one true God. In one commentary on these verses written by Sam Shamoun, it is said: “there is simply no way around the fact Christ is being clearly identified as our (great) God and Savior”.

JESUS IS THE “LIGHT” THAT GIVES LIFE:The story about how Paul was converted into being a preacher of Jesus from being a persecutor of those who believed in Him shows likewise the divinity of Jesus. Who else can appear as a “blinding light” that took away the sight of Paul except God? The appearance of Jesus to Paul, while he was on his way to Damascus, confirms that Jesus is the “light”, who is God.

We should not forget in relation to this that in John 1, the God who came down to earth in the form of man, with flesh and blood, and who lived among the people, was indisputably the “light (that) shines in the darkness”, and it is the “light” that gave life to all mankind. Then, Paul himself was told by Ananias that the “light” that he saw and which blinded him for three days was Jesus Himself.

In Isaiah 9:2, Jesus was also referred to as the “great light” that dawned on a people who have long lived in the deep darkness of sin. There should therefore be no doubt at all that Paul believed that Jesus was God and Savior, and this was his message in Titus 2:11-13 of the Bible.
