‘Radicalism, extremism’: The scourge of 21st century

PDFPrintE-mail

“(Whoever) kills a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind, and whoever saves the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind”

-Holy Qur’an, 5:32

“Moderate Muslims must be able to tap in the collective inherit memory of Muslims and remind them that the moderate way is indeed the heart and soul of Islam”

-Khaled Abou El Fadle, THE GREAT THEFT: WRESTLING ISLAM FROM EXTREMISTS

VIOLENT “EXTREMISM” AND “RADICALISM”

These two terms are now the subject of fora, symposium, conferences and workshops all over the country on how to counter the menace to human society, and the Philippines in particular.

Understanding the roots of this scourge now, is perhaps, the best to cope with this new calamity befalling all of us.

How did this come about?

FR. ELISEO MERCADO’S VIEW OF THE NEW SCOURGE; VIEW FROM ISLAMIC AUTHORITY

Then the world woke up one day totally shocked by the various religious and political groups proclaiming a return to the Islamic State, the Sharia’a (Islamic Law) swearing by the Qur’an, calling for Jihad. The groups are not composed of some aging or aged segments of the Muslim world as if left out by the fast moving wheel of modernization. No! they are young activists and they continue to draw students and fresh graduates of Technical Colleges and Universities to take on the new Islamic enterprise in Modern times, their “emergence” is something spectacular and unforeseen.

Looking at the new phenomenon menacing the world, let us see what the Islamic point of view has to say, from Shakhul-Islam Dr. Muhammad Tahir-Ul-Qadri: “Since theProphet made categorically clear that these people (Kharijites) will continue to emerge, time and time again, it is easy to recognize the modern day Kharijites, for they share the same traits of those of old. They too shed blood of people, they too brutally slaughter women and children and challenge the authority of the state; they too attack Mosques, murder peaceful people engaged in worship and target them in the market places and they too call their dastardly deeds Jihad. All the current acts of terrorism committed by the socalled “Mujahidin” are but continuation of the Kharijites doctrine and ideology”

MAUTE AND ISIS FIGHTERS DEATH: MARTYRS FOR WHAT?

We hear whispers at some corners that the death of the Maute brothers and the ISIS-inspired fighters in the Marawi Siege, died as a martyrs’ death, the supporters said. But died for what for whom? When asked, but no answers came.

Let us look how Islam looks at martyrdom, with its spiritual dimension. From an Islamic Scholar, I quote by: Mohamed Atif Mogohed Mohamed in his book ISLAM AND PEACE. He wrote:

Seven Types of Martyrdom (In Islam)

· Killed in Allah’s Cause;

· One who dies of Plague;

· One who is drowned;

· One who dies of pleurisy;

· One who dies abdominal disease;

· One who is burnt to death;

· One who is killed by a building falling on him;

· A pregnant woman who dies in labor.

It is to be noted, in Islam, that there is no authority to declare one is a martyr but Allah Himself, and sends this to the community of Muslims, who will eventually know who is truly a martyr—the hearts of every Muslims will speak the truth, thus, said all the sages of Islam of God’s power (Allah knows best!)
