IN post-elections, as always, we hear from most sore losers that they have been cheated in the polls—like the winners resorting to rampant vote-buying, willful disenfranchisement of the voters whose names have been reported as missing, using gov’t resources by those enjoying their incumbency, and many other serious accusations in a desperate move to make their poll wins null and void.

In our own May 14 Brgy./SK elections here, what I solidly gathered, scores of these sore losers have already filed their electoral protests before our local Comelec office in their efforts to void their wins in our recent Brgy./SK. polls. And, what I’ve just witnessed, based on their testimonies, they appear meritorious before our eyes. Now, the question is this, “Will our Comelec take immediate action on all their complaints of such alleged poll irregularities? Indeed, that’s a $64 million query to address. For all you know, in a twinkle of an eye, same political exercise will be once again in the offing, yet Comelec isn’t even halfway in resolving all their cases filed. In other words, it’ll be likened to an exercise in futility—unless you’re like the Marcoses who can verily afford to pay all these monetary requisites to amount in their astronomical figures prior to opening in full public view all those purported shenanigans— like a Pandora’s box with all its filths inside exposed to the hilt.

This is where Comelec flops, jeopardizing its own omnibus election code. This is where this country showcases its own full of flaws when it comes to its strict implementation of its own Comelec rules and regulations. This country arguably has all its enacted laws in place, but the nauseating woe remains, as usual, in their strict implementation that’s simply done, in most cases, selectively, and with that favoritism tinge to go along in our cultures as Filipinos. The pabor, pabor system haunts us till these days, since Adam. This is where we falter, so seriously. Perhaps, it’ll take centuries more than that of the almost four hundred years that this country of ours was placed under Spain—to correct all their supposed wrong and vile influences in our lives while virtually under their bondage for so long. The problem amongst us Filipinos, we just don’t seem to click with each other even after all these foreign dominations—like Japan, Britain USA, apart from Spain, opted to grant us our self-rule governance—capped by our declaration of Independence in June 12,1998—making us the oldest independent country among Southeast Asian(ASEAN) countries. And yet, compared theirs, we seem childish in many ways—to include governing our own country’s affairs. We haven’t mature enough when it comes to self-governance. Up to now, we are a big letdown in politics as corruption perverts right in our midst, though stealthily and surreptitiously, perpetrated by most of our shrewd and wily politicians defiled and reviled as inept and corrupt public officials. As many well-meaning citizens of this country fear, “Unless, they mend their ways, PRRD’s war vs. illegal drugs, crimes and corruption in this country won’t succeed at all. Du30 isn’t Superman. He needs the help of everyone for this nation to finally take off, and change for the better. Period. (By Jun Feliciano) (30)
