Let the “God of the Catholic Church” contend with Duterte

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… `If Baalreally is a god, he can defend himself when someone breaks down his altar’...” (Judges 6:31, the Holy Bible).

PARENTS WHO WERE, AND STILL ARE, THE PRIDE OF THEIR CHILDREN: Proverbs 17:6 of the Holy Bible intones: “...Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children...”

Indeed, my parents, Melanio Pauco Mauricio Sr. (November 24, 1932-March 22, 2016) of Ramos, Tarlac, and Salvacion Haber Lazo Mauricio (January 14, 1934-April 18, 2018) were, and still are, the pride of their children and their grandchildren, for they represent everything that had been loving, caring, and ever-conscious of what their offsprings and descendants needed.

Though they were a moderately-incomed couple, they were truly generous and good providers from the time they were married on July 08, 1956, until their departure from this life. We therefore request relatives, friends, and associates to read a Bible verse in dedication to their memory on their 62nd wedding anniversary today, and a short prayer as well for the forgiveness of their sins, the cleansing of their souls, and their acceptance into Paradise. Thank God in the Name of Jesus, Amen.

THE CHALLENGE TO PROVE GOD EXISTS MUST BE GLADLY ACCEPTED BY TRUE CHRISTIANS: There are two points in the latest tirade of President Duterte against "the God of the Catholic Church", where he said that the Catholics’ God does not exist. The first point is, every true Christian who believes in God should now endeavor to seriously think over his or her spiritual beliefs.

The President may have hurled an "impossible condition" to fulfil so a true Christian can prove to him the existence of God (i.e., taking a selfie with God and showing it later to him) but, if we think about it, that latest presidential blast against God is another golden opportunity to ponder on the Christian's knowledge about God, and on whether or not, on the basis of what he knows about God, the Christian can defend God's "godness".

The fact is that, for a long time now, many Christians assume they know God, and that they believe in Him. If we ask them to explain, however, who God is, or what He is, or why they believe in Him, it is a certainty that many will be unable to explain anything. Too, if we ask Christians if they even know what the "will" of God is, or if they know any of His commands, they would be hard put to give a coherent answer.

LET THE “GOD OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH” CONTEND WITH DUTERTE: The second point I wish to make on this issue is also simple: I do recall here the story of Gideon (Judges 6 of the Bible) who in the dark of the night destroyed the altar of a god named Baal. When the people came to know of the destruction of Baal's altar, they got furious and looked for who did it.

When they found out it was Gideon who did it, they demanded from Joash, Gideon's father, to bring him (Gideon) out so he can be stoned to death. But Joash said something which can likewise apply to Duterte's challenge now. Joash said, if Baal was really God, then he can punish Gideon by himself. "Let Baal contend with him", Joash said, and that calmed down the angry people.

Gideon thereafter proceeded to lead his countrymen in routing their enemies, proving that Baal was not the god it was claimed to be. The same thing can now be said of Duterte here. Since he has accused the "God of the Catholic Church" of not being in existence, the retort of Catholic Christians should be just like what Joash said of Gideon: "Let the God of the Catholic Church contend with him”. Let us see what happens after that!
