Q.) WHAT SHOULD WE DO IF THERE ARE OUR FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS BEING OPPRESSED AND PROSECUTED SANS ANY OF THEIR RIGHTS GRANTED?

A.) THE BIBLE HAS THIS TO SAY: “SPEAK UP FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES; ENSURE JUSTICE FOR THOSE BEING CRUSHED. YES, SPEAK UP FOR THE POOR AND HELPLESS, AND SEE THAT THEY GET JUSTICE.” (PROVERBS 31: 8-9) Email: jayfeliciano2@yahoo.com

NEW ZC Police Station 11 Chief (Supt.) Edilberto Alvarez bared the other day that of the petty crimes that prowl within his AOR—that’s largely within the city proper, “It’s in theft cases that we focus on.”

Supt. Alvarez said ever since, these petty crimes—specifically, thefts, have been hounding the law enforcers.

Based on their latest statistics in petty crimes, theft cases have gone up this year compared the previous year: 185 as of last year compared this year with 258 during the third quarter alone. The police colonel has called on the victims of all petty crimes, to cooperate with the police by pursuing their cases vs. these suspects--or else their cases will just be dismissed by the court when hearing is called. “The problem here is when they manage to recover their stolen items, they just lose any interest to pursue their case against detained suspects." In this instance, Alvarez said, the police can’t do anything, but effect their immediate release from their detention cells. “And, then, we see them all over again committing the same petty crimes. So, we appeal to the victims not to give up in their complaints even if their stolen items have already been recovered,” Alvarez implored.

“We really want them all put behind bars to effectively address all types of petty crimes. But we can only realize this if all the victims will cooperate with us,” the blue-blooded Zamboangueño police colonel pointed out.

SUPT. Alvarez rued that minors when involved in petty crimes are being unduly protected by our country’s “defective” laws, as they cannot be held criminally liable, until they reach their legal age.

Nonetheless, when Alvarez assumed post last June, petty crimes that climbed on the month of June with 60 or more cases, nosedived the month of July with only 38 cases. He said it’s in Zone(1) and in Zone (4) where they need to strengthen their law enforcement operations vs. these petty crimes.

PNP KEEP A CLOSE WATCH ON “DAYAWS”

Alvarez said they’re right now keeping a close watch on all these so-called “dayaws” as the city’s biggest annual fiesta in honor of its patroness La Virgen Milagrosa de Nuestra Señora Del Pilar, which is the feast of our Lady of Pillar, or better known in the vernacular as, “Fiesta Pilar”, is fast-approaching, and that’s on Oct. 12 with our annual “Zamboanga Hermosa Festival” serving as its major lead-up.

When asked if they’re well-prepared in their supposed ample security measures for the upcoming annual Zbga Hermosa Festival, Alvarez assured the safety and security of the fiesta revelers to come in hordes this year--underlining the need for the augmentation forces of our PNP based in  La Bella to serve as their backup operatives. “We can assure of a peaceful and orderly fiesta Pilar celebration,” Alvarez curtly vowed.

The “ber” months begin with September and October pitching in its scent towards the yuletide season on the month of December during which its whiff all the more soars to its feverish pitch! (By Jun Feliciano) (30)
