The year 2011 is one of hope and optimism. Let me begin by expressing my gratitude to respected businessmen and gentlemen of Zamboanga City, Mr. Efren Wee and Mr. Danny Lim. I had the pleasure of attending the annual Christmas party of the Philippine Development Corporation last December 27, 2010 in Astoria Hotel. As always, Mr. Wee was a gracious host. He introduced me to Zamboanga Today publisher Mr. Lim who invited me to write again for Zamboanga’s premier news daily. I used to write for Danny’s father, Mr. Alfred Lim, who was very kind and accommodating.
Mr. Wee has been the boss of my father for almost forty years. It is fair to say that PHIDCO has been instrumental in the success of my father in raising well-educated children. Through my adolescent years, I have made it a tradition to be with my father in attending the PHIDCO Christmas party.
In my interaction with Mr. Wee, I have learned about many issues affecting Zamboanga City. He has illuminated my understanding of the water and electrical supply problems facing the city. He has also deepen my understanding of the coconut industry-an industry that has provided livelihood for the people of Zamboanga, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi in the last sixty years. Through those years, PHIDCO has stayed to engage with the farmers and traders. It has grown as a company and continues to find ways to grow. I believe that PHIDCO will remain a bulwark of business in the city.
Under the steady and able hands of Mr. Alfred Lim, Zamboanga Today has established itself as a media institution in Zamboanga City. The torch is now with Danny who has done well in the expansion and growth of Astoria Hotel. In my short conversation with Danny, I was strongly encouraged to write again.
After a long hiatus, this is a refreshing new start. It comes at the heels of a new year for the Philippines and Zamboanga City. The new administration of President Noynoy Aquino has bannered this year to be one that will bring a better life for the Filipinos. While there have been challenges to the initiatives of PNoy, the Philippines will move forward once the administration will discover the plethora of powers attached to the Presidency. As for Zamboanga City, the activism of the Zamboangueños has had a positive effect on Mayor Celso Lobregat who has done a great job in implementing his vision for the city. Truly, the city is blessed to have Congresswoman Isabelle Climaco-Salazar and Congressman Erbie Fabian as representatives in the House of Representatives.
