The Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) had chosen Prof. Ali T. Yacub, Al-Hj, the Chairman of the Golden Crescent Consortium of Peace Builders and Affiliates (GCCPBA), affiliated with the Interreligious Solidarity Movement for Peace (IRSMP) to be one of the Baccalaureate Speakers representing the Muslim Community on March 29, 2011.

Prof. Yacub, Al-Hj, one of the notable and dignified personalities in Zamboanga City will inspire the two thousand nine hundred seventy three (2, 973) graduating Students of the said university. With this year’s theme “WMSU Graduates: expanding the Frontiers of Service and Social Responsibility to the Global Community”.

“its is a timely statement that our graduates hopefully, will be able to imbue with the sense of service, once they step out from the prestigious WMSU- and they too become the Service Warriors, the university’s legacy to the world” disclosed Prof. Yacub, Al-Hj.

It is noted that he had served as Director of the Public Affairs Office (PAO) of the University prior to his retirement and had been very active in the activities of the IRSMP, of which he became the Muslim Convener for two years. Being socially responsible, he dedicated himself to be the Chairman of the GCCPBA, a research group composed of Muslim professionals and outstanding leaders of the city which is s an off-shoot of the Golden Crescent Peace Center and now Peace Council.

Being a Service warrior, it had been his inspiration ever since to serve for the Muslim communities and enhancing relationship with Christians and Indigenous peoples through solidarity and dialogue. Moreover, his dedication to education paved way for him to help indigent students with scholarship grants from the La Hermandad Zamboanga. Ultimately, makes him proud to be of greater help to others.

He graduated at Zamboanga City High School-Main in 1963, and then completed his Bachelor of Science in Education, major in English in Zamboanga A.E. Colleges (ZAEC) in 1970. He had been a full-time classroom teacher from then ZAEC and now Universidad de Zamboanga (UZ) and became a professor in WMSU, where he served since 1984. He was recognized as an Outstanding Achiever of Zamboanga City High School –Main as well as Most Outstanding Alumnus of ZAEC.  The recognition further challenged him to inspire more people. It is evidently that he spearheaded the challenge of recognizing peace advocates as Peace Weavers and later on the Young Peace Weaver. He had been instrumental in acknowledging Muslim student leaders sense of great leadership through the Golden Crescent Achievement Awards since 1970 till present.

Also, he had been serving in many various groups to include the Council of the Royal Datus, Local Council of the Culture, Arts and History of the City Government of Zamboanga and many others. Now, inspiring the graduating students is really a noble task. It does not just prepare them to the real world after graduation but to strengthen their commitment to be of help to the society. Great leader as he is, he will be very instrumental in the development of more future effective leaders that will use social responsibility as an element for peace and development of the country.

He is also challenged to inspire his Alma Mater. For many occasions, he had been Commencement Speakers of some prestigious schools to include Southern City Colleges and ZION Evangelical School. It is also a good avenue that he himself can inspire the graduating class of his Alma Mater-Zamboanga City High School-Main and Universidad de Zamboanga. Kudos Prof. Ali T. Yacub, Al-Hj, a Great Leader, An outstanding Achiever, A Service warrior and an inspiration.
