Why Muslims wear Hijab/Headwear?

PDFPrintE-mail

Hijab or body cover for Muslim women of maturity age is mandated by Islamic Law. The Qur’an says: “Archangel Gibreel (Gabriel, Alaihis-salam) descended with Allah’s Leave upon Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) with the following Revelation (Message): O Muhammad! Tell your wives, your daughters, and the believing women to cover their bodies (Hijab or Head Cover) when they are out of their houses or on outreach mission, except their faces, hands and feet (parts that are normally exposed)?

In the battle of Uhud, the 2nd year of the Hijra’, the Muslims suffered heavy casualties, dead and wounded. Fatima, Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) only daughter with many women volunteers sought the permission of her father to go out and do nursing services to the wounded “Mujahideen” starting from her father prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who himself was wounded subject to compliance with the above stated Revelation, which became part and parcel of the Muslim women’s dress code, then and now until the day of Judgment.

Today, sad to say, even those parts of the body that are normally exposed are already being over-exposed, triggering the evil, lustful desire of oversexed men to commit rape. And at the rate these enticing behaviors are tolerated by the State and the Church and the deceptive reliance upon the use of the “Commercialized” condoms, society is in danger of becoming a haven of fornications reminiscent of the biblical days of Prophet Lut’s (Lot) Sodom and Gomorrah and whoredom in the time of Judea-the father of the Jewish Race.

Islam rules that the entire woman’s body is considered an “awrat” (private part) except those that are normally exposed as mentioned above. They must be protected, covered, shielded by means of hizab or body cover, to safeguard their chastity and honor, and to keep them away from the commission of Jinaa. The Holy Qur’an in 17:32 says: “Walaa taqrabuz-zinaa in-nahu Qa-na faahisatan wasa’a sabeela”. Nor come nigh to adultery; for it is an indecent (deed) and an evil way”. Abdullah Yusop Ali in his commentary of the Holy Qur’an says: “Adultery is not only shameful in itself and inconsistent with any self-respect or respect for others but it opens the road to many evils. It destroys the basis of the family. It works against the interest of children born or to be born. It may cause murders and feuds and loss of reputation and property and loosens permanently the bonds of society. Not only should it be avoided as a sin, but any approach or temptation to it should be avoided.”

Adultery in Islam is the same whether it is committed by a man or woman not lawfully wedded to each other. Fornication is willful indulgence in illegal sexual act. Abstinence, not condom, is the answer hereto including the dreadful H.I.V.-AIDS, Alcoholism, drugs, gambling, usury, and the endless torments of floods and typhoons are a challenge to all of us.

Time for all the children of Adam, regardless of Creed and Color to join hands and collectively and severally address these trials and torments. Together we shall overcome. Individually we shall fail.
