PNoy must probe Cuevas’ claims

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, `anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all’…” (Mark 9:35, the Holy Bible).

PNOY MUST PROBE CUEVAS’ CLAIMS OF HARASSMENT: President Aquino must do something to check the veracity of the claims made by former Supreme Court Justice Serafin Cuevas, lead defense counsel in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, that his law office have been subjected to investigations by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) after he started lawyering for Corona and, earlier, for resigned Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez.

Certainly, investigating lawyers who take up causes contrary to what the government is pushing violently contravenes pretensions at good governance or “daang matuwid”, and gives a lie to claims that current officials are trying to set this country towards a better, if fairer and less corrupt, government. Anyone who had a hand in investigating the law office of Cuevas must be fired, immediately, unless of course they acted with the blessings of their superiors at the BIR, and even of Malacanang.

HOW TO STAY HAPPY: A member of the Facebook group “Prayer Partners (Cebu, Philippines)” calling himself Bro. Bobot Apit posted a very powerful message on how to have a positive mindset. Here is his posting: “ `Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind...’ Romans 12:2.
“Many people today don’t realize that the reason they’re not happy, the reason they’re not enjoying life, is simply because they’ve trained their minds in the wrong direction. They’ve trained their minds to worry. They’ve trained their minds to complain. They’ve trained their minds to see the negative.

TRAINING THE MIND TO BE GRATEFUL ALL THE TIME: “But just as you can form these negative mindsets, you can retrain your mind according to the Word of God and form godly mindsets. I believe one of the main keys to retraining your mind and developing a positive attitude is by learning to stay grateful. When you stay grateful, you are focusing on what’s right rather than what’s wrong.
“The seed of the Word takes root in the good ground of your heart. This doesn’t happen automatically, you have to discipline yourself. You have to make a conscious effort every single day until a good habit is formed.
“Remember, when you live with an attitude of praise and thanksgiving, you are shielding yourself from the attacks of the enemy. The seeds of discouragement cannot take root in a grateful heart. Neither can bitterness, envy or strife. So today, retrain your mind and be empowered with His strength to overcome in every area of your life!”

EXTENDING PHILHEALTH COVERAGE FOR ONE YEAR OR MORE: I see no reason why the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, or Philhealth, can’t provide insurance coverage to poor Filipinos for 12 or even more months, instead of the three months extension it had already given. If money is the problem, Philhealth can ask the government to re-channel some of the billions of money it is doling out as “conditional cash transfer”, to pay for the premiums for one or even more years of added coverage. Health is more important than mere dole-outs.

CDO FORUM MUST LOOK AT THE BIBLE: It is good that some groups in Cagayan de Oro City are trying to look into the Sendong tragedy that killed nearly 2,000 people last year, but this will not yield anything good if the spiritual-Biblical dimensions of the calamity is not looked into. Rains, floods and winds are Biblically-promised, and unless we study what the Bible is saying about them, any forum such as the one initiated by Task Force Macajalar and the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities will just be another failure and a waste of money and time.
