LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor…” (Proverbs 21:21, the Holy Bible).
DISTURBING QUESTIONS ABOUT EARTHQUAKES: Quezon City realtor Leo Hernandez posted disturbing questions at the Internet group of the UP Sigma Rho Fraternity after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit Negros Oriental and Cebu Monday, February 6, 2012, and killed about 50 people: what is next, and why are earthquakes happening? Really, it is important to know what will happen next, and why are these happening, to somehow prepare our people against the worst.
But can we really know where or when the next earthquake will strike? Can we really know why are these happening? Another member of the Sigma Rho Internet group, Melcor Virata, posted an article tackling the fascinating tale of a planet called “Nibiru”, which could somehow explain why, within 2012 or thereabouts, more of these earthquakes and other natural calamities are bound to happen on planet Earth.
When the “Nibiru” phenomenon is viewed side by side with the accounts in the Bible which detail how the world will end, particularly those in the Books of Matthew, Mark and Luke, it will not be difficult to see that earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural calamities will come anywhere, anytime, in fulfillment of the prophecies of Jesus, our God and Savior, and only those who have truly aligned themselves with God will survive the coming mayhem.
JINGGOY, PRESS FREEDOM HERO: I join other media practitioners who are supporting the bill filed by Senate Pro Tempore Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada, calling for the decriminalization of libel here, in accordance with a United Nations directive. It is time libel is removed as a criminal offense and converted as a mere civil liability, because, truly, punishing someone with imprisonment over his expressed opinions violently contradicts the Constitutional guarantee of free speech. Mabuhay, Sen. Jinggoy, as you continue your journey as a press freedom hero.
HEAVEN’S WRATH ON THE CORRUPT: Mediaman-lawyer Toto Causing has a point: the Negros Oriental-Cebu earthquake may have been sent from “above” to expose the shameless corruption of contractors and government officials who built thin roads and highways in the two Visayan provinces. Pictures of these roads which immediately got posted in Facebook indeed showed that the roads will really crack even at the slightest tremor due to their thinness. Heaven’s wrath is now upon the corrupt!
TRUTH ON “ILLICIT RELATIONSHIPS”: “I have no idea”. This was the terse reaction of defense lawyer Tranquil Salvador III when I asked him, through text, to respond to charges by prosecution lawyers in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona that they will expose “illicit relationships” plaguing the defense team if Corona’s lawyers will not stop badgering congressmen-prosecutors with technicalities. With Salvador’s reply, prosecutors must now come up with the truth about this issue.
UP ALUMNI SEEK HELP FOR ZOEI: The UP Grammermons---a group of UP Diliman alumni pretending to be grammatically-challenged---are going all out to help a young girl named Zoei, so that she could raise the P2 million needed for her operation in the US. If you have a heart for helping others, you can log on to the group’s Internet blog---the Diliman Diaries---for details. You can also log on to the Facebook group “Taga UP Diliman ka kung…” and send a message to Chanda Shahani.
PNOY SIGNS SALE OF BAGUIO LAND: There’s a new twist to the fight to save 182 trees which SM Baguio City intends to uproot to give way to a parking lot: President Aquino has just signed a deed finalizing the sale of the land where the trees are standing to SM, thereby making SM the absolute owner of the land. The question here, however, is this: does SM’s ownership of the land give it the right to cut down the trees? Is there not a law which bars the cutting of trees anywhere in the Philippines---at least without government permit?
GOD’S RECIPE FOR SUCCESS AND GOOD LIFE: What is God’s recipe for success and the good life? There are many, but one of them is found at Joshua 1:8 of the Bible, which says: “Do not forget to read the Book of the Law; meditate on it day and night, carefully following all that is written in it. Then, you will succeed and become prosperous”. Let us try this today---let us read the Bible, even just one verse, then think about what we read, and then follow it all throughout the day.
