“Read the Bible” movement launched

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…Do not forget to read the Book of the Law everyday. Meditate on it day and night, and be careful to obey everything that is written in it. Then, you will be prosperous and successful…” (Joshua 1:8, the Holy Bible).

RP INCHING NEARER TO CIVIL WAR? Now that it is clear that Chief Justice Renato Corona has supporters also willing to take the streets to voice out their support for him, the real question that the Aquino government must now answer is this: with a divided Filipino nation equally determined to push for what they want over this impeachment case, where is the Philippines really headed?
Is the civil war we have been repeatedly warning about here in this column still a farfetched possibility, or has it become a big reality now that pro-Corona forces have shown a great degree of willingness to match the number, strength, and the noise of the pro-Aquino crowd?
I am not praying for a violent confrontation of these two groups, but if responsible leaders of this country will not start finding a way to ease the tensions right here and now, we will all be faced with a bloody skirmish pitting Filipino against his fellow Filipino in a fight to the finish which will surely destroy the Filipino nation in just a matter of days.

SPIRITUAL SOLUTIONS AGAINST CALAMITIES: Did you notice how our country is being victimized by natural calamities which seem to be coming endlessly in rapid succession, one after the other, even if our people have just barely recovered from the death and devastation brought about by previous rains, floods and earthquakes?
Indeed, we cannot deny that tragedies from natural calamities are becoming as common as the onset of the rainy and dry seasons in many parts of the Philippines, and what is fearsome about all these is the realization that we are all helpless and unable to do something to either stop the calamities from coming, or, at least mitigate its destructive effects.

Or, are we really helpless and powerless to do something? Whether we believe it or not, yes, there is something we can do, and I am urgently proposing that, side by side with all the preparations being undertaken by the public and private sectors focusing on disaster-preparedness and effective response, we can also try to resort to what I call the “spiritual” solutions against calamities.

“READ THE BIBLE” MOVEMENT ON: How do we go about this? I am asking each and every reader of this column---whether it be the English or Filipino version that is being read---to start reading the Bible everyday (the more pages, the better), and then meditate on the verses that were read, day and night, and then to carefully obey everything that is in the Bible. Let us make this some kind of a “Bible-reading” movement.
Many will surely raise their eyebrows to this suggestion, but then, the question is: does anyone have any other solution that promises effective results? Only the Bible offers the most effective solution even against natural calamities, and this is simply because, as the Bible is telling us, it is actually our refusal to listen to God and to obey Him that have been bringing these disasters to us (see Deuteronomy 28:22-23 and Matthew 7:24-27).

I am therefore calling on everyone who believes to join me in this movement, by reading the Bible everyday, meditating on it day and night, and obeying everything in it, for at least 30 days starting the day you read this column. If we can ask other believers to do this, the better. At the end of this 30-day trial period, let us assess the  effect of our Bible-reading, meditation and obedience, then we will proceed from there.
