More questions on Scarborough’s `sale’

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, `If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free’...” (Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, in John 8:31-32, the Holy Bible).

REACTIONS ON “SALE” OF SCARBOROUGH SHOAL TO CHINA: Reactions poured in for our column which clearly asked, “RP sold Scarborough Shoal to China?” Mercifully, there were kind reactions, although there were reactions branding me as “Chinese Communist” and “opposition propagandist”. Well, whatever, I thank God in the name of Jesus that people are reacting.

Here are some of them: from the Facebook group “Kalikasan at Wikang Filipino 2012, Ikatlong Taon”, Meilin Suaili said “thanks for the info”, while Carlo Rolluqui chimed in “wow… sounds true…”

From the Facebook group “Etcetera”, Esan Labos intoned: “Are these documented facts? I respect your opinion but this could be just propaganda by the opposition. This is something that can't be kept a secret if it's in fact true. I think it is a campaign by the Chinese to sow confusion. I'd like to hear other opinions, please…”

WHERE IS PROOF OF “SALE”? Also from “Etcetera”, Edgar Siscar articulated: “Brother Melanio, where are the soft-copies or the documents that could vouchsafe for the veracity of the foregoing? Let us not spread lies, assumptions and innuendos about the Scarborough Shoal, especially when it (is) the subject of a territorial dispute.

“Would it not be true for instance that what you posted were sourced from false information that the People's Republic of China is spreading in the internet to discourage Filipinos to lay their territorial ownership of the Panatag or the Bajo de Masinloc?

“I would like to suggest that before we post any 'information' that could affect the Filipino people and their territorial integrity it should first be verified and counter-checked. What you just posted is very demoralizing for unscrupulous Facebook users. Thank you very much! And, oh, yes, by the way, are you a Chinese Communist?”

QUESTIONS, NOT FACTS, ON SALE OF SHOAL: Here are my reactions to Esan Labos and Edgar Siscar: first, what I raised was clearly only a question: did the Philippines sell, during the time of President Macapagal, the Scarborough Shoal to China? I did not pass this off as a statement of fact, but as a question which people in the know should be able to answer, if they would care to answer at all.

Then, if this sale is in fact true, are we to deny or hide the truth? Why should we do that? Because of nationalism? Because of honor? Can nationalism and honor be based on a lie? And then, again, if this sale in fact took place, can we really expect China to be dumb and stupid not to know it even beforehand?

Finally, why the name-calling, and branding of someone who asks questions like me, as a “Chinese communist” or a “propagandist for the opposition”? Will the truth or falsity of the sale be resolved when we brand someone derisively and derogatorily? Is this not the reason why Filipinos have not progressed in any real way---because we tend to degrade the opinions we do not believe in on account of our self-righteousness?
