Gun-for-hire tops causes of shooting incidents

Gun-for-hire remains the top cause of shooting incidents in Region 9.

Chief Supt. Billy Beltran, Police Regional Office 9 (PRO9) Commander disclosed that per their records, for the months of January to April, there were 67 people who were gunned down regionwide by gun for hire. Many of the cases have also remained unsolved.

“These are some of the cases that worries us because many people do not want to witness out of fear. We are also in the process of trying to match the spent shells if the suspects are the same or not,” Beltran emphasized during a press conference held Wednesday afternoon at Camp Batalla.

The PRO9 chief also reported that aside from gun for hire, the other deaths caused by shooting are due to old grudge - 40 incidents, heated arguments - 19, work related  - 9, drug related - 4, self-defense - 3 and insurgency - 1.

Based on the victim’s death category and status, it appeared that 18 of those shot death were unemployed, 16 farmers, 5 businessmen, 5 drivers, 3 students, 2 construction workers and 2 elected officials.

Beltran said the total crime statistics in the region have reached 5,913.

He added that of these crimes 1,829 are index, 750 crimes against persons, 21 homicide, 136 murder, 466 physical injuries, 127 rape and 680 theft and robberies. (Nonong Santiago)
